Default Europe moves to end passport-free travel in migrant row

European interior ministers agree to 'radical revision' of Schengen amid fears of a flood of migrants from north Africa

In a serious blow to one of the cornerstones of a united, integrated Europe, EU interior ministers embarked on a radical revision of the passport-free travel regime known as the Schengen system to allow the 26 participating governments to restore border controls.

Looks like the continent is united in xenophobia in the community spirit ... really.

Would be fun to see EUnuts undermine the whole concept of United Europe in front of their electorates, after all disunited Europe for borders but EU superstate for everything else ?

It's good to hear that the USA would take economic refugees by the millions. Not every country can have such an enlightened way to treat their aliens the way USA does.

    Also LOLUSA

So not wanting penniless, potentially culturally incompatible foreigners to move to your country is xenophobia?

I guess so, because penniless and potentially culturally incompatible foreigners still have the right of free movement if they are EU citizens. And if they are not, then possession of a passport and valid visa would still allow free movement.

Border controls only restrict illegal migration.

Britain has border controls but for some reason we restrict migration from English-speaking peoples and can do nothing to restrict European migration. Go figure.

Actually IIRC passport and visa allow you free movement across the countries towards your destination. So for example if you are Russian with Italian visa, you will have problems at the Danish/Belgic/Dutch border. It depends on the visa, of course.

True, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria and Spain will continue to have problems with border control and I don't have an issue with other European states establishing border control if the border countries don't do their job properly. The border states deserve more funds for border control and maybe more cooperation from the inner states. Whether the ticks in Brussels will try to rectify the matter is unknown.

But they're not EU citizens. They're Libyans, Tunisians, Eritreans, Ethiopians and Somalis.
And I think movement for those not from the EU should be restricted to legal immigrants. I think arriving on the coast in boats after having paid smugglers qualifies them as illegals.

That was always the case. By definition, illegal migrants cannot cross borders legally. I cannot simplify the point much further.

Passport control only catches those daft enough to go through conventional ports of entry. Refugees and those caught smuggled in and so on should be processed and deported if required.

Britain clearly loves Slovakians more than Australians and New Zalanders.

It is still passport free, as long you hold an ID card from an EU country. You can still travel from Berlin to London with just someone taking a fast glance at your ID.

Not surprising at all. This is the same EU who's only concern for illegal immigration into Greece (which accounts for 90% of all illegal immigration into Europe) is that they don't leave Greece for other EU countries.

This latest development is because Italy has enough political weight in the EU to refuse to become an immigration ghetto like Greece, and is promptly issuing residence papers to a number of illegal immigrants from Tunisia.

The Tunisians get their papers, and move on into France. Hah.

I think it's reasonable. You can't with Bio-power for that long without expecting to have consequences.

The Brits already asked for passports though.

God I hate the "far right wing" lable used for Danish People's Party. Except for immigration policies, their policies are much more centrist, even close to being Social Democratic at times.

It's good for Denmark since so many illegals immigrate there from Sweden and Germany, which they quite naturally want to stop.
