So I've been meaning to play strategy games forever now, but I just havent picked one up. Rome Total War looks sick, but I wanted to know if it's a good game for my to start off with.

id say its close to unique, mixing real time and turn based strategy. you may struggle to start with but you will get the hang of managing your economy and armies. it doesnt matter if you play other games, as far as i know my experience at playing this game is only useful for the TW series, because its different. i dont know what other games you have in mind but i would recommend RTW over any other strategy game.
Always Outnumbered...Never Outmaneuvered
Its different, not like those boring AOE clones littering the market.

i would suggest you start with Medieval total war or shogun total war before u pick up rome but yes rome is the sickest strategy game out there.

I didn't play any of them before I played RTW, and I still very much enjoyed it.Originally Posted by Hyungoku
same I didn't play any other CA games before Rome and now its almost the only game I play, its definatly the only strategy game I play, now fps thats different. Anyways Rome is a good game to get, you stay interested in it for a long time and even once you do get bored you can check out all the mods found on this site. As for being a newb, you be okay, just play the tutorial and slowly work youself up. Maybe play some custom and quick battles before you really start the campaign. And the campaign map isn't hard to get used to, it just requires some thinking.planning. Hope this helps. -Shadows. and welcome to the forums.

well i started with strategy games like age of empires and starcraft.. in this time i found shogun total war.. first time i played a turn based strategy game! its great! and Rome total war is much better^^
all in all: if you like to play single player and you like to create empires, make enormous battles and like to get also a nice economoy i would advise you this game.. it's just genious![]()
Thanks for all of the great replies. You guys really are some hardcore gamers. I'm definitely going to pick the game up now. What hooked me was finding Rome Total War Gold Edition. I'd be willing to spend the same amount on just RTW, but their was no way I was going to pass it up since it also includes the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack.
But the Gold won't let you play mods like RTR because it's patched to 1.6. But don't worry, IICR the next RTR version is going to be on 1.5/1.6.
Yea, but indicate release goal is about 9-10 months away, I believe Chirstmas was brought up. Most people do not play a game for 10 months. Anyways RTW is an excellent game, though I find it to have some flaws, but that is after 100 of hours of gameplay.Originally Posted by Shuriken

Do any of you play the game online? I saw that you could have up to eight players online at RTW's site (www.sega.com/romegold). That definitely adds a lot of replay value to the game for me.
RTW is mainly a single player experience (with all the mods and such). May I suggest www.totalwar.org for finding multiplayer buddies? They seem to have more 'multi-player-players' (is this a word? lol).Originally Posted by darkone
The replay-value for me comes from the mods, not the multiplayer. But then again, I don't play many games online in general.

Actually, the vanilla game offers a lot of replay value too. The different cultures and factions you can play all are a different experience, and once you've gotten good at them, the factions and challenges of BI make it like a whole new game. I've been playing pretty much nothing but RTW since I got it over a year ago, and still find it interesting. Mods open up a whole new world too.
I think RTW is a good strategy game for a newb. When I first played RTW, I wasn't really into strategy games or even cared about it but when I played it for the first time, it was like a fish in water, I felt as if I was finally home. It's very easy to learn the game and you'll find plenty of walkthroughs, advices, and etc. all over TWC.![]()

RTW is different
its definately not the easiest strategy game, especially for a beginner, but is no way the worst
RTW is specifically designed to be easy to use, thus widening the market and bringing Total War out of its previous status a niche franchise, and in doing so diluted some of the deeper elements

I think its one of the most in depth strategy games. As far as management and warfare are concerned you have to worry about funding your expansion, not just going beserk on unlimeted killing sprees like some games.
