I start a game and see that I am 50k in debt??? Another guy mentioned 'being 50k in debt' but I thought it was a typo i.e. he had 10k gold at the start but would lose 5k each turn... someone hates the ere

I was dumbfounded when I saw your question, but I'll repeat what I've said already somewhere else, though I'm sure you've read it.

ERE is 50k on debt, because it is biggest faction with the best base of expansion. ~5k income is very good start. Don't panic, after 8-10 turns you'll be on plus. Until then just try not to loose your income and your possessions and your army. No one said a factions has to be on plus at the start.
