    Default NO BRIBING?!

My game's on H/H mode as the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Incredibly frustrated when the Roman Empire declared war on me with the Ayyubids, and began sending stack after stack after stack after stack after stack after stack at me. So I added tons of money to me, 500,000, and tried to bribe. NO ONE ACCEPTS ANY BRIBE FROM ME! NOT A FULLY STACKED ARMY, NOT A MEDIUM REBEL ARMY, NOT EVEN AN EMPTY REBEL FORT!

    Something is seriously wrong here.

I usually bribe my neighbors before they declare war - try bribing their generals
    - in some cases they would demand a bribe much more than 500,000

It pays to trade a settlement for an alliance with the huge empires... going to war would be too much hassle Or trade the region between you (hopefully it's only 1) and the enemy to one of their allies

I think the AI is more partial to a settlement than cash... not certain

Bribing works but it's very expensive and depends on your diplomat's skill too, I think. If you failed a lot of attempts already the one you're using probably sucks by now.

I see AI diplomats outside my settlements initiating contact all the time (during AI turns). They must be attempting bribes since no diplomacy window pops up for me to interact with -- so I'm glad it doesn't work too easily.

On the other hand I have successfully bribed generals and small raiding parties many times in 2.02 so I suspect it still works in 2.3, doubting the team took time to sabotage such a feature.

You have to have a GREAT diplomat. And even then, it's not worth the money. Of course, you're cheating, so that won't be a factor. There's an easier way.... mind your reputation and your relationships. Be good and good things will happen.

thats not what it means.. it been like this since vanilla.. when ai diplomats starts doing that means ai faction is unhappy with you, and if they are stronger at some point ( lets say 10~ turns ) they will go to war with you.. so if you see diplomat doing stuff like that.. send yours to them/him give him some credits, and he will go home happily

I knew that is what it meant in general -- that shady business was going on and the faction was unhappy, but I thought they were really attempting bribes over and over too! Some old misconception from an RTR mod I guess. Thanks for clarifying that!

You wouldn't even notice if for example your diplomat is being bribed, you just get a message after the turn is finished saying something about betrayal .

This is ridiculous; I added money up to 1.5 million, asked for a bribe from one army... and they asked for 50k in return. I try to bribe a smaller army, they reject me flat out. I reload the save, bribe that smaller army for 30k, and then the first army refuses to accept any bribe! I keep going, and up my money to 3 million, try to bribe an army, and they REFUSE EVERY TIME.

And by the way, what is your reputation?

Abysmal. It's not like I sacked their capital; those were entirely different people!

I figured out a fix; instead of adding tons of money, souping up my diplomats with SmoothTalker and Secretive work to make bribe attempts more solid and realistic.

If your relations with character's faction are abysmal and additionally your faction standing is bad you can't expect that people will gladly accept money from you. It doesn't matter what have you done to gain bad reputation, what matters is bad reputation.

So far I understand that for you "realistic" means "what suits me best". Right?

And what does this mean with regards to THEM declaring war on ME without provocation? Is my only solution genocide?

Your relations with the faction, your global standing and hardcoded campaign difficulty settings are crucial, I'd say. You could do nothing to make the faction angry, but afaik relations between some factions deteriorate automatically with time, so doing nothing to make them better would be your mistake, I think.

Considering that they're invading me nonstop, what am I supposed to do to improve relations?
