    Default CPU

So earlier my computer was working fine, and I decided to shut it down for a while. I start it back up and my computer starts acting weird, and not letting me do anything. So I use start up repair and eventually it let me do stuff, just with my CPU hanging out around 90-100%, even with no windows open, just background stuff. Now I have tried fixing all that and it is better, but now it is jumping from 10-95% and back CPU usage in seconds.

Can anyone help me try to fix this? I even have boosters going on and it is still doing all this.

    1. Go into msconfig and shut down all updaters you can find.
    2. Do a deep aintvirus, antimalware scan.

Just a question - is it rare for you to turn off your computer? Do you use sleep mode a lot? What problems were you having after this and what methods did you use to fix it? Your answers could help dial in your problem. Good luck!

I do use Sleep a lot, and I used Advanced System care to do a clean sweep.

OK, let's try again. Define "my computer starts acting weird, and not letting me do anything". How long were you waiting for the system to respond? Now you say that running Advanced System Care did the trick. My bet is that you have a huge number of files in temporary folders that need to be cleaned out. Temp files build up over time (at least on the older OS' in my experience). But the Sleep mode on XP doesn't really delete temp files - it just backs them up in case they need to be used when the system is wakened.

Do you have access to an OS disc? Can you reinstall Windows? It's sure to solve your problem but it is a major headache and a pain to do so. Try out irishron's advice and see if that helps. In the future shut down your system from time to time to let it do some basic housecleaning. Good luck!

It's running better now so I'm not going to worry about it for now...And I don't think the problem would warrant wiping my whole computer, at least not yet.

I will start shutting down more.

Just out of curiosity, where is this msconfig thing?

msconfig is a Windows utility. It can be accessed using the "Run" (or Command Prompt) on any Windows system. From the 'Start' bar look for run and then type in "msconfig".

Now be aware - you can do damage here so be careful. You're not likely to cause lasting damage but be generally conservative when messing about with this. You should also know what you want to accomplish beforehand.

Now that I've answered your question would you care to let us know why you want to go directly to msconfig? Your original problem doesn't seem like you'd need to delve into that utility and I'm wondering what websites you're getting your info from....

    Good luck!
