Icon5 Who was the most influential person in lotr?

so as written in the title, the purpose of this thread is to discuss about who was the most influential person in lord of the rings.
some says it was aragorn, some confirms it was gandalf, others are on the side of hobbits (merry and pippin), or (sam and frodo). here are many fans of boromir too. legolas and gimli are very important persons too.
some are with evil forces such as sauron, saruman or even balrog.
in my opinion, the most important person was gandalf, because he always tried to unite good forces, always made right decision and led them to victory.
    so what's your opinion?

P.S. it's recommended to say your opinion and also explain why do you think so.

Gandalf because he was "the man with the plan" and Frodo because his mission gave hope to the Free peoples.

    Valar: Melkior

    Elves: Feanor

    Men: Eärendil

    Dwarves: Durin

    Evil Minions: Gurthang

Third Age was Pretty dull Compared to the first ..

if we are talking about First Age I'd put Fingolfin to the list as well.

He would be in the top 3, but Feanor is the one and only catalyst in the Silmarillon, so he i think is the most important single person in the entire lore, rivalling the Valar.

As of third Age I would say Sauron. He is the most charismatic, initiative and power hungry of all the characters in the Third Age. Remember that all the actions performed by the others is all responses to Saurons actions. If we exclude Maiar I would say its a close race between Elrond and Galadriel, with Elrond coming out on top due to being more outwardly minded than Galadriel.

I'd say Aragorn. He played a very important role in all the trilogy. He saved Frodo and the other hobbits several times, played a decisive role in the battles of Helms Deep, at Minas Tirith and in front of the Black Gate and eventually became the King of Gondor/Reunified Kingdom.

He was totally my 2nd favorite character in the movies (Extended Addition Faramir being 1st).

I'd actually go with Elrond in third age (had to redeem for his lack of influence in the 2nd age).
He did call the council at Imladris, made aragorn a king again, (movies) got the Silvan/Sindar Elves to defend Helms Deep. Lets face it, he made the fellowship a possibility, and through his actions insured the men of the west had the military means to at least hold off sauron while his primary goal of destroying the ring was carried out.

i agree with u in case of faramir, because he wasn't corrupted by one ring, but haldir isn't influential in lotr

Gandalf of course. He was known all across Middle-Earth and respected by many great leaders. Since the poll is based solely on influence in LOTR I'd say Gandalf wins. Though, towards the end I think Aragorn(After he was crowned King of Gondor) became more influential and Gandalf kind of took a backseat.

gandalf and of course sam, the mission would have failed without him

Sauron is clearly the most influential. Lets say if he suddenly got conjunctivitis and died (i know thats not possible while the ring is still around) then all the Haradrim and other evil men, orks and what not would just go back to fighting each other and raiding the odd human settlement.

Saruman would not have attacked Rohan because there would have been no point and he would not have been persuaded to attack them by the big man, as a result Gandulf would not have become head of the order.

lastly Sauron also held great influence over anyone who had/was near the ring eg Boromir and to a degree Frodo and Sam.

only watched the movie, and aragorn & gandalf seemed to be the most badass guys from there...
i mean, they pratically crusaded against isengard and mordor, and played the main roles in the war(frodo was the protagonist, but cmon, he wasnt really unique, and sam did most of the job)...
not criticing anyone or judging, just my opinion...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Sauron. All is about defeating him.
It's only after you have lost everything, that you are free to do anything.
