Default Medieval 2: Total War failed to initialise audio...

Medieval 2: Total War failed to initialise audio system. Audio card is not supported or audio drivers are out of date or not installed. Game will continue with audio disabled.
First of all, I have played Medieval 2: Total War for at least 3 years now. I have NEVER (NEVER, in case you misread that) experienced this problem.

Second, as the error message states, I get no sound in game because of this.

I don't know what is causing this problem and why I have never seen it anywhere else. I most certainly have proper drivers and sound card installed. This happened after a reinstall. I tried running M2 on vanilla and on a mod. I have the STEAM version of the game.

Have you changed any hardware or updated any software?

No. I do remember using Startup Repair after I downloaded it though. I'll reinstall it and see what happens then.

Startup Repair can do more harm than good. Some things are better left alone.

Hello there, maybe i should not up this topic and create a new one but my problem is actually the exact same case : i've just downloaded the mod Call of Warhammer and installed it and now i encounter the same message which tells me : " Medieval 2: Total War failed to initialise audio system. Audio card is not supported or audio drivers are out of date or not installed. Game will continue with audio disabled. "
I have no idea where it comes from, it wasn't there before installing Call of Warhammer, i played Stainless steel and the vanilla game without that kind of bug.
I tried several things, like updating my audio drivers, checking the sound card but off course it remains unsolved.

So have you guys any idea before reinstalling everything ?

One, do Stainless Steel and vanilla still works?
Two, have you posted this in the Call of Warhammer forum?

If the answer to one is, "Yes", then your next step is two.

How about any other games, iTunes, cds, etc.?

Everything else works perfectly, it's only Medieval II and the mods after this installation. And I really don't get why it includes the vanilla version.
I know this is few clue for you, but for my part, Im really out of ideas. I've tried erything, including install the game + the mod again but nothing changes, as soon as I install CoW, the problem reappears.

Are you patched to Kingdoms 1.5? If Steam you are but any others is questionable. I think CoW requires the patch.

Yep, the latest patch, the 1.5. And this is not the steam version.

    Reinstall then. Your only choice.
