    Default Armor levels - limits?

What are the maximum number of armor levels supported in Vanilla M2TW? I would like to separate the early mail, early plate, renaissance plate, gothic, lamellar armors, etc, into their own armor levels (instead of the 6 armor levels currently used by Vanilla M2TW), so different smiths can be built to upgrade the different armor levels. I know that various Kingdoms mods have more than 6, but what about non-Kingdoms?

Never hit any limit, so I suppose there are enough that you don't have to worry.

Awesome. Now I have to go through each unit to figure out an appropriate description of their armor...

There is no limit to it but a unit itself can't have more than 3 upgrade models afaik.

Hmm..I'm curious, how we add new armor grades? Same thing for adding new projectiles?

In the EDu highlighted red part represents the upgrade models where the names are model names referenced in the BMDB file.

I would have thought the amount of upgrades would be limited by the amount of (possible) smith levels. That would be max 9 if I am not mistaken.

Unless you have two different trees, one being a lower-tech smith that focuses on mail and brigandine armor, and the other being a higher-tech smith that focuses on plate armor. Then you could have 18 armor levels. And if you have an advanced metallurgy lab, you could throw in 9 more, that would be 27 armor levels. But I think there is a hard-code of three armor upgrades (on top of the base-level armor) for a unit, as there are only three armor upgrade icons.

Oh, I was talking about adding a new smith level, the vanilla has currently 6 but RC has 27, how we add them?

Check the capability section for the smith type buildings in your EDB.

Just create a new building, and in the building abilities add "armour 7", "armour 8", and so forth to each building you add.

Or, since some "armor levels" are really similar, such as the leather coats that eastern factions wear and the quilted gambeson jackets that western factions wear, then those two armor types ("armour 1" and "armour 2") can be upgraded in the same smith level. Brigandine and partial plate likewise. Light lamellar and heavy mail. And so forth.

here's an example from SS6.4 expanded.txt file showing one faction's armour levels.
cross ref with the EDB for the actual smiths and the armour levels each upgrades

    {EMT_BYZANTIUM_ARMOUR_LEVEL_1}Leather
    {EMT_BYZANTIUM_ARMOUR_LEVEL_2}Kavadion (Padded)
    {EMT_BYZANTIUM_ARMOUR_LEVEL_3}Leather Lamellar
    {EMT_BYZANTIUM_ARMOUR_LEVEL_4}Light Brigandine
    {EMT_BYZANTIUM_ARMOUR_LEVEL_5}Light Lamellar
