couple of things you can try

    - first, right click on the Age of Empires shortcut and go into the compatibility tab, try different settings.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

make sure to check run as administrator.

    - disable aero

    - what is your video card? if you have the latest drivers or a recent driver, you might have to revert to an older driver until the manufacturer fixes this issue.

    Default Connection Issues

Me and my brother wish to play a game (AOE2) against each other. We are both on laptops which are connected to a router (We are both connected to the same router). However, we cannot seem to join each other's games. Is there a solution to this problem?

    Thanks.

You may need to configure firewalls on both laptops correctly, as a quick test disable the firewalls on both units and see if you can connect to each other.

Unfortunately that hasn't solved it. Both firewalls were disabled and connection didn't happen.

Well, it could see the game. (Visorslash's game) My bro could click on that, but it wouldn't connect.

I use to play AOE2 against my friend on a direct connection over ISDN 10 years ago so my memory is very rusty on how we used to connect to each other. I think we connected via by matching our IP addresses which I think we got from the dial connection window in Windows 2K.

These days with ADSL all you get is the gateway address and LAN address, so I would try the following. Run CMD via the search/start bar on each laptop and in the command prompt type ipconfig and jot down the IP address and gateway of each machine and when in the game get your brother to host and enter in either his Lan IP or try the gateway.

I'm guessing you have you may have tried that so try connecting to he's actually real world IP address which can be easily got by going to here.

Man I loved this game so much and playing against my mate was so much fun, I always a bit better them him and I could be a right bastard if I wanted to for instance rather then smashing him to Kingdom come I would get a load of villagers and build a wall around he's settlement to stop him from securing resources and expanding, other times we would play 2 Vs 3 VH AI opponents. All good times.

    Edit:

Just remembered, if your playing this in Windows 7 you have to disable Aero otherwise the colours are out of sync.

Yeah the only thing to get rid of the color bug is the kill task command, disable aero theme etc doesn't works. I have been playing AOE-II on a daily basis for like many years.
With that the network also gets bonked so that's why you can't go LAN gaming. There is one widescreengaming forum that has a wide screen patch to go more than 1280*1024 resolution so try that maybe that fixes all the issues the color one and the lan one at the same time, just google it worth a shot i guess.

I got it to work as well. I ran services.msc in "Run" turned the SSDP and UpnP thing to automatic. Then I loaded up task manager, killed explorer.exe and ran conquerors. It worked fine, no colour issue and I could connect.

    I also beat my brother.

Right click on it and go to properties and change the startup, by default its set to manual so choose automatic. As for playing on a lan have you tried anything I suggested?

    Edit:

Sod it!! Just for you I'm going to install AOE2 on my laptop and see if I can create a connection with my desktop to play over lan.

'SSDP discovery' and 'UPnP device host' just sort it by name and you should see them. If you can't find them and just want to the colours to be right just disable Aero works just as well.

Success! It took a bit of work but I got it working. Firstly I setup my desktop as the host, I flipped back to desktop and saw a Windows firewall window appeared and to give it every chance of working I ticked both options also why I was back on the desktop I went on line and grabbed my external IP address. Back on my laptop I tried a direct connection over the internet using my external IP address but it didn't work for some reason (this is how I connected back in the old days) and then went about the LAN route.

When I selected LAN I got the same issues as you and I couldn't find my desktop that was hosting then I remembered about the firewall. I flipped back to desktop and saw two windows for the firewall alerts and gave AOE2 permission (again ticking both boxes). I tried the Internet connection again and it still didn't work (this I used external IP, LAN IP and gateway nothing worked) and then I selected LAN and low and behold it appeared!

The only thing I can suggest is make sure both games are running version 2.0a and if your using any CD patches make sure there the same one. I think the big issue here is the Windows Firewall also if you have any 3rd party firewall of 3rd party internet security software in place turn it off. It might also be worth checking your router to see if it has a network switch in it, if there's no switch that would explain why you can't see each other over a LAN connection.

[Fontpcomic sans ms]Not a problem we can do a direct internet connection, its how I used to play with my friends years ago. All I need is your external ip address, you create a game, I enter the address and it should find your computer, there's no need to use the zone. [/font]

Hey nice. I tried what you said earlier Freddie, but it didn't work. Thanks all for the input. I'm afraid my skills are rusty, though the Feudal Age Rush always owns my brother.

But I can connect and get a game working, which is great.
