Rome:Total War not responding

Hi. I installed total war and the installation went soundly, however I can not get the game to start. When I double click the shortcut I see the little red square box saying rome total war with the darkened soldiers and then expecting to see the screen turn black and lead into a CGI or something , nothing happens . Eventually an error comes up saying the game is not responding. The technical information says there are two errors.

If anybody knows how to fix this I would be very appreciative, thanks anyway.

Did you install this off a CD?
