Default Rift growing between Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah

There's been a recent rift growing between the Iranian President and the Ayatollah of Iran, apparently over the firing of a minister by the President, and then the reinstatement of the minister by the Supreme Leader who disagreed with the President's decision. You also have conservatives that are voicing their concerns about Ahmadinejad and not being fond of the fact that he has seemingly gained to much power. We will see how this proceeded in the coming weeks:

Missing Iran leader Ahmadinejad under pressure from MPs

Powerful MPs in Iran have called for a closed debate on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's apparent boycott of his official duties.

The president has not been seen at his office for eight days, missing two cabinet meetings and cancelling a visit to the holy city of Qom.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, recently re-instated a cabinet minister he had pushed out.
Analysts believe an internal power struggle may be under way.

Parliament has tacitly threatened the president with impeachment, the BBC's Mohsen Asgari in Tehran reports.

Intelligence Minister Heidar Moslehi was forced to resign on 17 April but promptly re-instated by the supreme leader.

Nearly 300 MPs urged Mr Ahmadinejad, in a letter, to respect Ayatollah Khamenei's decision.
While the president has not been seen at government meetings, Mr Moslehi attended a cabinet meeting last Sunday, the Associated Press news agency reports.

One unnamed reformist politician told the BBC that a "game of chicken" had begun.

"I hope one side yields at the end - otherwise it will move the country toward unprecedented instability that will certainly suck the current Arab uprisings into the country," the politician added.

Why some Iran conservatives are turning against Ahmadinejad
    By James Reynolds
    BBC Tehran correspondent

Iranian MPs are reportedly trying to raise a petition that would allow them to debate the impeachment of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mr Ahmadinejad has two well-known sets of opponents - Western governments trying to prevent him from obtaining nuclear weapons; and the Iranian reformist movement which tried to defeat him in the 2009 presidential election.

But now, a third set of opponents has begun to emerge - from within the ruling conservative movement.
This collection of opponents may prove to be more dangerous to Mr Ahmadinejad than the first two.
On Sunday, an article in the Wall Street Journal said four lawmakers had released a report accusing the president and his government of breaking the law.

The alleged offences include a $590m withdrawal from the Central Bank's foreign reserve fund without parliamentary approval; the illegal import of oil and natural gas; and lack of transparency in budget spending.

Ray Takeyh, an Iran watcher at the New-York based Council on Foreign Relations, says conservatives are concerned that the president is trying to transform the country "from the Islamic Republic to the Ahmadinejad Republic".

Conservative newspapers in Iran also report that lawmakers have started a petition to collect 74 signatures to debate impeachment in parliament.

    Conservatives fractured

In practice, impeachment cannot go ahead without the approval of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
It's been reported that Mr Khamenei has ordered the parliamentarians not to go ahead with their move.

Ali Ansari from St Andrews University in the UK says Ayatollah Khamenei has decided to "wed himself" to the fortunes of his president
According to Mansour Farhang of Bennington College in the US, impeachment "only has a chance if Ayatollah Khamenei is 100% behind it".

But, he adds, Mr Khamenei has too much of his credibility invested in Mr Ahmadinejad for this to happen.
Still, the move against President Ahmadinejad shows that the conservative movement - which came together temporarily in 2009 to see off the threat posed by the opposition Green movement - has fractured.
President Ahmadinejad represents the ultra-conservatives - a populist movement led by pious, austere veterans of the Iran-Iraq War.

But his faction is increasingly opposed by other conservatives - who object to a concentration of power under the presidency.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may have the support of the Supreme Leader for now. But in the long-term, some believe that his position may come under threat.

"Increasingly I'm beginning to think that his (Ahmadinejad's) removal is possible," says Ray Takeyh.
"The charges against him are that he is attempting to centralise power in his hands. And that, in due course, will threaten Khamenei if he's not careful."

So it is good or bad?

Neither, we've got a power mad authoritarian dictator on one hand, and a theocratic plutocracy of academics on the other.

So long as he has the backing of the Ayatollah he is effectively a dictator in terms of power. In the event of a schism between them, the likelihood would be that the to factions would be Ahmadinijad as a dictator like figure and the Ayatollah with the more theocratic based government.

Means you want to say that Irani people support him? That's not true, Ahmadinijad is much reasonable and moderate than Khamenei and people love him.

I wouldn't put reasonable and moderate in the same sentence when mentioning either tbh

Well Khamenei compared political opposition to bacteria which doesn't sound too reasonable

    and people love him.

Well I saw on CNN that thousands of Iranians from one square to another, were listening Ahmadinijad and chanting against US supported dictator Mubarak and US/Israel policies, I think CNN, BBC and Al-Jazeera are not Iranian channels.

We all know how this is going to turn out. Khamenei is simply going to put another conservative figurehead in 'power'.

People often forget who is really in power in Iran. If President does something not in line with Ayatollah's wishes, there can be consequences.

Ali Larijani is a rather smart guy, he has connections to the religious elite of Iran, and he has criticised Ahmadinejad in the past, so he could be possible replacement

That is actually a very common hand gesture for Iranian men. My father would do it all the time when he was trying to explain something. The Iranian people have no shortage of hand gestures and body language

if a Presidential candidate is not considered pious enough by Khamenei then he can be disqualified from running in the elections.
