Direct X are several APIs (application programming interfaces) all bundled up into one. it's composed of sound, music, graphics, etc.. Direct3D being the graphics API, as opposed to OpenGL. Direct X allows interaction between several software programs and each version brings new features to the table, not only visual features but performance enhancements and changes to audio and sound among other things.
