Default Ran No Jidai - Progress

Hello all ,About the Project called Ran no Jidai , Times of Chaos is quite some time that we are working on this .... here is a brief description of the mod.....

    1
It is a full conversion from BI expansion game based in the time of the Feudal Japan , named Sengoku Jidai ....

    2
There will not be hoards of units , I am more for few but good than many but repetitive or similar , also this would just confuse players on my opinion...but every unit is highly detailed and historically precise , if you are expert of Japanese warfare , you will be able to recognize every single type of armour or equipment piece ...

    3
Multiplayer oriented , this means that the multiplayer will be one of the main aspects and gameplay balance will be particularly taken care of ...

    4
Historicity , all units will be remade in historical way , of which u will be always able to find the sources used and documentated , mainly information taken from osprey books , the several books about uniforms and reconstructions of Japanese era , with the help from several experts on the period...

    5
New map ,made by BDH will span from northern Japan to the southern island with an incredible level of detail based on real topographical maps ....

    6
some other scripting will be present ,like four seasons or respawining armies etc...

The Name is inspired about the purpouse of rewriting history in a time of turmoil for the Japan .....

    7
New Animations made to depict at the best the Japanese style of fighting ....

the list of factions is ...

    Kyushu:

    Shimazu
    Otomo

    Shikoku:

    Chosokabe
    Miyoshi

    Honshu:

    Ouchi
    Mori
    Amako
    Urakami
    Hosokawa
    Ashikaga(Senate)
    Asakura
    Oda
    Imagawa
    Takeda
    Hojo
    Satomi
    Asai
    Uesugi
    Mogami
    Date

    rebels(other Daimyos)

    total of 20 factions +rebels
So there will be big easy Clans and some little clans, very hard to play.

here is a fine example of the splendid works that are created by Tomte of Doom wich is also our main advisor for historical armour reconstructions ....

And Finally now some Screenshots of the Game .....

We have to also thank the huge work made by Kagemusha in the not as visible but eextremely important work on the text files without wich nothing would be showed here ...her an example of his work....that allowed New videos to be part of the events that will happen during the campaign ....

Here instead you can admire the splendid map made by BDH that with the help of Wild bill is being adapted to the Sengoku era mod ....you can notice the high precision in the reproduction of the actual Japanese territory ....

And new Strategical units too of course ...

Don't mean to be a rude a-hole. But in the 4th picture those swords are ridiculous. The handle of the swords is big enough to a be a swords its self. The blade its self is long enough to be a spear too.

    Hilmico:

The blade was mistakenly made too long, but the hilt will stay the size it is. When I gave Prometheus the instructions for the sword model, I had something like this in mind:

This is a momoyama era no-dachi. This no-dachi was actually used in warfare, and it's displayed mounted in it's original fittings. Whats up with the rediculous hilt, then? Here's what I've written about that on another forum:

As for the lenght of no-dachi hilts. Its a matter of evolution. After the glory-days of the no-dachi, the naginata and nagamaki almost completely put it out as pure curia. They were simply better weapons for the same purpose. The blades were shorter, thus easier to produce and cheaper, and the shafts/hilts were longer, thus making the weapon both easier to wield and cheaper. It all made for good reasons to abandon the no-dachi. However, those that did survive developed in the same direction, i.e. the blades got shorter and the hilts got longer. Now I'm ofcourse speaking of those swords intended for battlefield use.

The reasons for this was to produce a compromise between the strenghts of a polearm, and I suppose, the macho-factor of a really big sword. There are really no good points(except fear-factor) of wielding a no-dachi when you might as well wield a naginata or a nagamaki, but the points become fewer and loose their strenght as the sword is given the properties of these weapons, and thus loose its weaknesses.

As such, fieldswords intended for use were mounted in large hilts. The further apart you can grip, the better balance and the more forceful the blows you may produce. Even to start with, a no-dachi isnt suitable for ordinary swordplay, its only natural you would modify a huge sword to be used in a more practical way. A no-dachi should be thought of as more of a hybrid between a polearm and a sword, rather than just a sword, because thats how they have to be used.
IMO, the "real" no-dachi fitted for battle-field use, just because of its curious design, is a very intruiging and beautiful weapon:

You are right. It is held almost exactly like a naginata!

I saw a no-dachi in a temple in Nikko. It was 1.80m long. So i dont find that's exagerated what you saw on the pic. Specially if you consider that japanese men were 1.50m tall in average.

For a minute I thought it was released.

Still, magnificent work. Better than a Shogun Total war 2 would have been on the RTW engine.
