Default Brainstorming - post your ideas for courses

This University has plenty of potential that isn't being used now, and I think many would like to see that remedied. Let's start with some idea generating; post your ideas for courses, or if you think you know something you would like to teach, post that as well. Let's gauge the general interest of the forum members and apply that towards getting some classes rolling here.

To start: I cannot think of much I might be able to teach aside from intro to java programming. However I'm thinking more modding-oriented classes is what everyone is generally looking for, so that is likely out of the question for the time being.

I suggested a Writing Course a little while ago and the only reason it was denied as it wasn't modding/technical..

I think by diversifying it will do the Uni some good.

GED says it was more because writing is too subjective, not as much teaching things that do and do not work. Which makes sense, writing styles can vary a lot and they can still be good, nothing makes one more right than the other.

But if one can propose a course that teaches about writing in a less subjective way, it may very well be passable. I might look into this in time.

Why not facilitate a writer's workshop environment? The students submit stories to the professor and their peers; then, they discuss each story individually. You could even assign texts to read and have a book talk over them.

Imo should be an open Uni.

look at the thread "class for modding basic", started 16th march 2010 and gone nowhere. In it there was a mention of the uni getting a new organisation (here and here), but that was end june 2010 last time we heard about it. How they got anything done in the old days with the pony express and pigeon, I don't know.

I understand it's time consuming for 1 person to make a class, but I'm sure one can harvest enough good will amongst knowledgeable people to share the burden of teaching and structure a learning center, and make something out of this place. Give the keys to the content staff, they'll get things done.

I would primarily like to see a skinning course using GIMP, but i also like the idea of it being opened up to more than just modding classes and whatnot. The Univeristy has been a bit dead and forgotten of late, so anything that breathes new life into it would be great.

That might be something to do over the course of a very long time, a sustained course that is. It might be possible though something like that will require multiple professors to fill time gaps over such a long time.

Not really. Assuming we had a four to eight week course and eight members participated, we could critique two stories a week and everyone could submit two shorts.

That would work, but not for the Uni I think. For this to become a university type course, it needs some sort of objective criteria and course outline. I am working on a few ideas, a writer's workshop style might be helpful but it cannot be the only focus.

Perhaps the criteria requirements for the University is the reason that there are so few classes being taught. In any event, I could develop a course outline.

Let me start by asking this: is there a general no-go police when it comes to classes that have nothing to do with modding or computers? I can't agree that a writing course would be impossible because of the reasons stated in this thread.

If there is such a rule...well okay then

If there isn't: what information do you require from somebody looking to set up a course? These probably:
    • Course subject and subject of the different lessons
    • The homework/assignments that will define wether somebody passes or not
    • Clear marking of boundaries (what do we teach and what don't we teach?)
    • The professors responsible for the course
    • How long the course is meant to run (1 month-6 months)
Am I forgetting something here? I'd be very happy to provide a "presentation" of sorts to whoever decides if a course is given the green light or not. Would there be other members interested in teaching/following a writing course?

I'd sign up for anything that might help me to understand the GIMP better.

    This.

Especially a course on NTW/S2 atlas texturing, that would be interesting.

I´m interested in Texturing with Gimp.
I also think that a IWTE class (custom settlements for M2TW) will be helpfull. These guys will be badly needed in some months...
