As I write this I am at school on my assigned computer in CAD (computer-aided design) class. Apparently, the sucker who uses this computer in the class before me managed to install a particularly obnoxious malware program known as "WhiteSmoke." From what Google can tell me, it appears to pose as a language translation program that starts every time you log in. Thankfully, the school has some sort of feature set up where whenever you try to run a program it asks if you're sure you want to proceed. So, whenever WhiteSmoke comes up I'm usually able to tell it not to run. However, this is really only a temporary fix (if it even is a fix. Knowing how malware works it's probably still running in the background somewhere) because I can't get it with the school's virus protection. They only installed a cheap version of Norton that can detect viruses, malware, etc but doesn't delete them (probably the stupidest thing I have ever heard...). They also have some kind of Trend Micro scanner but it doesn't appear to be recognizing it as malware either. Since I can't technically install any new programs (IE - better virus protection) without breaching the school's "computer use contract" (punishment for which can be anything from a reprimand by the vice principal, to a detention, to a suspension) and I can't uninstall WhiteSmoke because access to the program files and even the control panel is completely blocked, are there any other options as far as manual removal goes? Or should I just continue to hit that "don't run" button every time I log in and hope that eventually somebody else fixes it?
