Hi,
I was wondering about that, I prefer to create my own objectives than trying to "succeed" the game ones.

I have yet to win a TW campaign since Rome...
I could care less... i usually quit when I see I'm steamrolling and over...
I can't here... due to Realm Divide...
My objective has always been trying to immerse myself in the historical period and generally enjoying the experience rather than completing objectives. I've only ever finished 2 campaigns in the 6 years i've played Total Wars and those were both short Brutii campaigns in Rome.![]()

same here. i play for my own objectives. I have not once completed a Total War campaign as per what the games says are victory conditions.
I only play as long as the challenge exists - late gameplay has always been a TW problem and I don't think Realm Divide really solves that issue.

I agree, and I think paradox hit that mechanic spot on with their reputation/infamy/badboy system, and the prestige system. Those were transparent, predictable, and fare methods of curbing massive expansion, unless it was measured just so, otherwise difficulty ramped up and it was war on all fronts.
By just making it war on all fronts to keep it engaging is a bit meh. I do enjoy it, though... in it's own way. I plan for it, and then I act! That seems very in line with the thought pattern necessary if one is to achieve the title of Shogun!
Mods have always stripped CA games of their attempts at this mechanic, right away, and not always purposefully. I reinstall RTW and try to play vanilla, they are manipulating the crap outa where you go and how things progress. Isn't there some full out civil war trigger there too? The pope in M2TW... etc etc.
They've tried to do something (CA) each time, and they execute that idea well each time. I just don't think as many folks are head over heals for those ideas here on the forums from time to time.

I always follow the victory conditions,so i completed a lot of campaigns. In my opinion the TW games are not really designed for own objectives, its not Minecraft where you have to create your own entertaiment.
I usually try to set my own goals, but I've been trying to meet the goals in Shogun lately just to do something different.
I always follow my own objectives. I do sometimes follow smaller objectives if they make sense, but stuff like, `Take such and such territories by 1600 to win the game` , I completely ignore. I take them by when I take them. that`s why i am glad that CA has always had a play on feature. Every good strategy game has like Civ4.
I`m in 1621 in Shogun at the mo.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
This ^ at least for the first play-through. THEN I will play the way I want, as long as I want.

I play for my own enjoyment and if that happens to coincide with the Victory conditions then so much the better.
The journey is more fun than the end game anyway.
Your reality sir, is lies and balderdash, and I'm happy to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever!
Well usually with TW games my own objectives. But with such a limited scope I don't really see how much Role Playing I can do. I guess maybe take an island or do a small migration campaign, maybe I'm just not being creative enough![]()
If you like the picture of my woman, GIVE ME REP!!!!
I'm just like you. I will try at the game objectives if it's they are something I can achieve in the progress to, or in compliment of, my personal goals. They usually align, and it seemed to me in the early game that objectives are triggered in response to your activity? Like I'll get prompts to use ninjas only if I haven't, but have tea-houses... or I'll get a bonus to ninja stuff if I've been using them for a while, or the whole ashigaru experience reward.
I have always been VERY wary of Mods doing too much and rearranging the default game away from what it`s meant to be. I would only use small Mods (mostly cosmetic) that never changed the original vanilla idea.
It was only due to Empire Total Crap that I was actually forced to install serious big Mods, like Darthmod (which I knew about for years but never touched) in desperation to get the game I expected from CA.
I made a slight mistake with Shogun 2 this time, because I almost immediately installed a big mod before playing out one campaign. This has made it very difficult for me to know what CA has done by default and what the Mod is doing. I was even thinking, `Where are the Horos that I really like the idea of?` Only to much later discover the Mod had actually removed it because people didn`t like it. Now that`s fine, but I should`ve stayed with vanilla and used only tiny Mods that don`t affect much.
I don`t even remember seeing the actual realm divide happen, it just seemed to slip by me- I wonder if that was because of a Mod too?
My next game will be vanilla and just cosmetic, slow-move mod. I have nothing against great conversion mods, I just think it`s best to play at least one campaign vanilla game first so you know what`s different when you install a Mod.
I almost never bother paying attention to campaign objectives, nor do I usually pay attention to the Missions, since they very rarely make sense.
'Capture Province A!' the missions commands.
and I'm like..."But I just signed an alliance with the Owner of Province A!"

Only time ive ever finished a TW campaign was by both surprise and accident.
Both, generally the overall goal will be take the 20-40 provinces or whatever the winning conditions are but with my own slant, such as only using Ashigaru armies, or converting asap, having no allies, etc.
my own first, screw what the game tells me to do(yay 2000th post
