there is a dilemma that can pop up and allows you to hire ronins. i've played a lot and it never happened to me, so i'd say it's very rare. the way i understand it, it has a chance to fire when a clan is destroyed
heroes you recruit through the top tier buildings. i've only built the top tier sword building once and i never got a chance to use my hero in a manual battle. by the time i usually get that advanced in technology/arts the game is pretty much over in a manner of speaking

Wow that really must be a rare event, because I've completed 3 campaigns and destroyed tonnes of clans and it has never triggered.

Well thats a bummer, maybe ill just et a mod that lets you recruit them. Do they look any different or anything ?

well their unit cards do look different. incite enough revolts and you'll end up seeing some in a rebel stack eventually

As for hero units I think they are made when you build the legendary unit structures

I got once the Ronin. They appeared after the second destruction of the Bessho clan, but not on their last province. They appeared on a territory i took from the Môri, which i'm still fighting. You can see their stats in the encyclopeidia. They are just a little stronger than sword samurai, but they are less in number. Their number is the same as bow samurai.
As for the hero units, i still didn't made the legendary dojo's to produce them.

Played several campaigns and only once got the chance to hire ronins. Never used them in actual battle though. As far as hero units are concerned, I always research their buildings and recruit them. It is fun to use them (they are really powerful) and they add a little spice to an army. I mean by the time you recruit them you most probably are fed up with normal samurai. Wouldn't it be nice if they added a few units in the future? I'd even settle with different skins.

I've only gotten Yari Ronin's from inciting riots and then bribing the rebels. They are not worth their money but they did the job in taking a castle with just agents. They are not a unique unit, the rebel force had 5 of them. They did not have any special abilities.
