    Default Selling GFX card.

I have an EVGA 8800 GTS 512mb card, what should I ask for it? It's brand new, never been installed or anything.

they tend to sell for about $35 on tech forums because while old they still do a decent job in Folding @ Home, and as physx cards for the true nvidia fanboys that need them, but yea about $35 is all you will get maybe $45 if you put it on craigslist and get lucky

I have a friend who believes they still sell for around $300...I said I'd give it to him for $100, I didn't realize that they had sunk so low. That's really .

What a nut Obviously any current gen $300 GPU far, far,far outperforms the 8800GTS.

well they sunk so low because its a rebranded pos now to be blunt

8800GTS 512 has been renamed to the 9800GTX then again to the 9800GTX + and then again to the GTS 250..

now to put it another way

nvidia has released the 8000 series then 9000 then gt 200 then 400 and now 500 series that 8800GTS is now 5 gpu revisions back and in reality its about 5 years old now in PC tech terms that ancient.

XFX GTS 250= $95 new after mail in rebate its $65 new.

the 8800 is still a beast card, my friend has 3 8800 Ultras in tri SLI and they outperform all but the most powerful of new cards. that configuration brand new on GPU's alone is 2,100 dollars 700 per card

Well.. Umm, are you sure about this pal? Because one 5850 HD is as fast as three 8800's, so I dont think I have to say how much waste that is. If you'd get one 5850 you would have like three - two times less power consumption, heat, etc etc etc. Sapphire 5850 Xtreme is around 100 euros these days.

It's a decent card, but it's main flaw was that a lot of the EVGA ones had overheating issues, and that it doesn't support DX11.

I sold my XFX 8800GTS 640mb for $45 shipped a few weeks ago on Hardforum. Believe it or not, but the 512mb 8800GTS is a bit faster than the 640mb version, but I can't imagine you'll get much more than $45 out of it.

We all know that tri-SLI or tri-crossfire have poor scaling so there really isn't any way that 3, 8800GTS's outperform "the most powerful new cards" or even upper-mid-ranged cards for that matter.

they sure as hell do, almost all the games he has actually do scale well with them, he ran Shogun 2 on maximum possible settings at 40-50 FPS, plays NFS Shift 2 max, Metro 2033 on DX10 max, pretty much any game you can name he can run it max and at better FPS then all but the most expensive new cards, and they are 8800 Ultra's, the 700 dollar version of the card, he actually has 6 of them but you cant use more then 3

Shogun 2 hits the vsync (60fps) cap for me but I haven't tried it with a single card before.... brb

Edit: OK I ran the game at 1920x1080 with everything on ultra and the only time I got less than 60FPS was when I'd zoom in on a battle wherein it would dip down to 40FPS. So a single $350 card pwns his card in tri-SLI. Told you they sucked in comparison to today's GPU's

Your wrong, they dont "suck" they are 4 year old cards that perform well against new cards, beating all but the best, and he can't complain since he got 6 8800 ultras for free

His power bill has propably costed him more than buying those cards would've anyways. And beating all but the best.. No. They dont even beat a 5850 and it isnt even close to the "best".

And I'm not even taking account crossfire scaling here, I just multiplied a 8800 ultra result by three and compared to 5850's score. And they lost.

He got 22,000 on 3Dmark06, a 5850 gets around 19k, so its close. and his video cards are nothing compared to the draw of his 30,000 watt sound system

and 3dmark 06 is an utter pos because it puts more on the CPU then it does GPU,

go run real benchmarks aka actualy games not synthetic garbage,

3dmark 06 was also well known to prefer Nvidia gpus as it used physx so alot of times nvidia cards scored higher then ATI do to Physx giving it a boost, disable gpu physx and watch the score go down.

but ive seen single 5850s on overclocked systems hit 25000-35000 points so yea kinda fail since the score comes from the CPU not the GPU in those tests.

but for comparison sake 3x 8800 Ultras = $700+$700+ $700 new so theyve held up good for 4 years, where as 2x 8800 GTX cards were $200 cheaper per card overclocked passed the ultras for far less aka $1500 vs $2100 in gpu cost so its rather moot point, not to mention 3x ultras are pulling about 240w each for around 600w since its not linear on just the GPUs, not to mention 600w vs 150w of a 5850,

the 8800 series were good cards in there day but in DX10 they get destoryed they were never that good in DX10 games

depending on the game the 8800s get stomped a good example would be Dragon Age origins,

a single 5870 or 5850 ends up on par with a GTX 295 which is 2x 275 gpus, 2 8800 gtx / ultra gpus = 1 275 in games so if 3 8800s cant beat a 295 it wont beat a 5850 or 5870 granted again comes down to a per game situation but even then 8800s will be slower in the majority of titles.

and in the older benchmark titles like Crysis 3x 8800ultras tend to be slower then a single 5850 so your buddy is drawing nearly 5x the power to lesser performance, granted if hes had the gpus the full 4 years there performance has lasted, but ill put it this way its still asinine

4870x2 when it came out bought it sold it bought 2x 5850s gained 35-45% more performance and total cost for the change was $45, sold both 5850s 1 at a time bought 2x 6970s out of pocket cost $190 so at the end of the day ive increased my performance end over end each year with ease and spent less then the cost of those 3 gpus 4 years ago, not to mention my performance has kept getting better and better as well.

Overall 8800 ultra cards are good but there long in the tooth way past there prime and suck so much juice for the performance you get not to mention they no longer get performance updates or preferential treatment in newer titles.

another game title that still gets compared back and forth is FEAR
    3x 8800 max settings get 86fps where as a 5850 pulls 152fps

    in company of heroes
    3x 8800 104fps vs 5850 at 181fps

    3dmark 06 scores
    3x 8800s = 17800
    1 5850 = 17600

    3dmark 05
    3x 8800s = 20000
    1x 5850 = 21800

really comes down to game and drivers but in general a $140 5850 smacks the 3x ultras around and when it comes to minimum frame rates the 5850 tends to show its superiority with fewer drops in frame rate. but i will give the 8000 series arch a nod for its time it was beastly,

but even Crysis will show the newer cards superior

at high settings 3x 8800 ultras at 1920x1200 = 32fps at very high they drop to 18fps
single 5850 gets 26 fps at 1920x1200 at very high settings

but it dosent matter much besides the extreme power draw 8800 can still hold there own if sli is implemented properly, simple due to the mass number of console ports that only really utilize DX9 with extra effects tacked on after the fact lol.
