I propose a mod for M2TW that would cover much of europe, africa, north and south america during the years of colonial expansion for the main european nations starting around 1550 and ending in the late 1700's.
Is anybody else interested?

Its an interesting Mod but I guess its a littel ambitious with the size of the world your trying to cover, and we don't even know what the Campaign map is going to look like. Well atleast you won't have to do any or many animations (I believe it was a ***** for the NTW2 guys to get the animations donw.)
It will have to include portions of these places already though, so his map ideas may not be too far off. It is POSSIBLE that this will be the expansion, but in my opinion it'll be the reformation era (religious wars) in Europe. It's not a bad idea, but the combat maybe simular to NTW2.

I am. That's because it was in the 17th century when Finnish cavalry Haccapels (Hakkapeliitat in Finnish) kinda ruled the battlefields. I'd really like to see them in a Total War game. I've seen them in Age of Empires III but that's not the same... By the way, they're called here in Finland Hakkapeliitta (single unit) because they used to shout before charging: "Akkaa päälle!". That means something like "Rush them!" or "Cut them down!". I'd be really happy if a sequel (or later TW game) would include the Swedish-Finnish empire (not sure if that is correct but Finnish was a part of it).Originally Posted by Zhuge_Liang

This time period would also cover the english civil war, the american colonial wars, the spanish armada and god knows how many other famous wars. A mix of primative troop types, advanced ships, ever advancing gun powder units, pikemen, heavy cavalry and riches over seas. Who wouldn't like this mod idea?!
Yeah I would love to see colonial or imperial troops arriving on to the battlefield with thousands of native auxiliary. I wonder if CA will address that in the gameplay that spain didnt conquer mexico without the help of nearly 100,000 toltec and allied warriors. I better not see 500 spanish wiping out 10,000 aztecs in this game without significant native auxiliary troops.

I'n thinking what KScott did too. A new expansion will probably be a true colonizing of the New World. What else is there for an expansion idea since they opened the can of worms that is America? A post-Renaissance Europe? I don't see any fun in just getting some new units with better guns and cannons fighting in Europe all over again, i.e. Napoleon. But I like melee fighting anyway, not the ranged guns. Ranged guns are kind of boring after a while. It makes me wonder how TW can evolve without relying on almost all boring, ranged gun units for future historical games. I hope they switch it up and make a fantasy game with D&D style creatures and all that. There are many similarities between TW and the old Master of Magic game (a Civilization-style game with a lot of depth) and a mix of those two games would easily be the best strategy game I've ever seen.
Anyway Zhuge_Liang, I'd hate for you to spend so much time on this and have to release it around the same time (or after) the devs make the same thing.
I'll tell you what would be a good idea in my opinion. The way I see it, Total War games have taken a wrong-turn in becoming these sprawling entities that try to cover several periods of history. It would be far better to concentrate on a smaller period of time (like Shogun did) and do it really well. What I think would be quite good would be to do a mod specifically about the Spanish conquest of Central and South America, or alternatively about the wars between the British, French and natives in North America. You know, the exploits of General Wolf and all that sort of thing.

ya it sounds good, i think the logisitcs sound kind of wierd. I mean, i would take like 50 years to march from north to south africa, and how would you get enough ACCURATE info on the african tribes of that time? i mean you could, but mainly, the only real kingdoms (call them what you want) were around the major rivers like the niger, the congo, and the nile. soits a good idea, but it would just take a lot of work. One more thing tho (its aquestion about MTW2), can you from coast to coast in the americas? cause that would nbe sick. also, can you even get to north america? cause if u cudnt tha would suk.

It sounds good but would be hard to implement, and plus, like Kscott said, it would probably be the expansion.

This is an interesting area for a modding project, one which I've been a fan of for a while tbh. I know that it has already been attempted with Native America: Total War, but unfortunately this project went inactive a while ago by the looks of things.Originally Posted by Zhuge_Liang

If a mod for M2TW such as this went ahead, where would the primary focus be? Would it be upon the Europeans, who must gather enough resources to fund the eventual conquests of the new world? Or would it focus upon the Native American tribes, who must battle each other before deciding whether to unite against the invading Europeans, or even ally themselves to the invaders?
I've played some of the games in the AoE series, most relevantly AoE 2: Age of Kings. Although this game was far from being historically accurate with things such as non-existant timescales, recruitment of one unit at-a-time etc, the inclusion of factions such as the Spanish, Aztecs and Mayas was interesting. There was even a campaign were the Aztecs had to defend against the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, armed to the teeth with plate armour, arquebuses, cannons, horses, smallpox![]()

Personally, I really would like to see mod for this time period. Nevertheless I fear that naval combat, naval trade and the whole idea of naval conquest will be forgotten in next TW game. Naval power in trade and military were truly important especially in time of colonization, and as I said I'm not expetcing CA to do much to correct those issues from previous TW games.
Im doing something similar, on a slightly smaller scale.
The Caribbeans, from 1630 to 1730, with colonial powers such as Britain Spain Holland France and Portugal. And several pirate factions and maybe some native american ones.
Not really your size of map but it was an important region in colonial affairs![]()
Good German gentlemen (yes, triple G) are now working on Thirty-Years war mod...Although this has nothing to do with colonialism it is, in my opinion, as far as M2TW can get... link http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=315422
