Default Withdraw from battle = army destroyed

    Hi,
I am currently playing a campain of RSII with Rome but right now, when a withdraw from a battle, my army disappears, (all generals and troops are killed). This happens when the AI is attacking me during its turn, if I attack an army during my turn ,and then withdraw, it works well. This is quite annoying, is this a known bug ? What can I do ?

    This is happen either when

    1. You are surrounded (another enemy stack behind) hence logically a whitdrawl would result in annihalation as the army is pocketed
    2. You spent all movement points and the army has no movement points left at the end of your turn which is resulting in annihalation too as you can not flee (no movement points)

No bugs here...this setting is very logical..now that you know you can deal with it...fight or die

It also happens when you are in enemy territory with no clear line of retreat to your own territory (i.e. no boat to retreat too and/or your territory is 2 or more provinces away)

I'm hoping this is sarcasm. If there is no room to retreat to obviously your army is going to be destroyed.

I'm not sure I'd call it a bug - it means you've got yourself into a situation you can't withdraw from. It's not unique to RS2 though - look out for the skull next to your army - if you see it you can't retreat and must win the battle or die.

There are cases where the skull isn't present and your army will mysteriously vanish upon pressing the withdraw button. I'm just theorizing now but I think this is due to the fact that your "escape" route was blocked off at some later junction, so the game automatically thinks: "Well, there's nowhere to go, time to delete this army."

Annoying, yes. But kind of puts things in perspective.

Imagine you are on a cliff. You are facing the ocean. You take one step forth and fall of it. THAT'S how surrounded looks like

Hoo well, I had never experience this until this RSII campain even if i have played Total war games a lot. My two armies were probably too far from my territory and with no mouvement point. I though that if I had no mouvement point left or nowhere to escape, the withdraw button would be locked.
I think it should be because if you don't notice that your army is surrounded, you just loose it.
    Anyway, thanks for your answers.

The withdraw button is locked when you can not withdraw more (second withdraw after first one)...
Unfortunately the user UI can not be modded (how it displays, locking/unlocking buttons)...I tried but the files are encrypted and can not be decompiled other wise I would change a few things for better gameplay

Shouldn't you be able to fight this battle where the army is cornered and destroyed? I initiated a battle (Siege, with enemy reinforcement stack) lost the upper hand during the battle fought nice and orderly retreat, destroyed their stack in the field leaving a decent garrison in the fort, then chose to withdraw with more than half my army intact (perfectly capable of fighting again) and i'm rewarded with a completely destroyed army..i understand lack of clear retreat, i was backed by the sea but with a bit of space to move, if anything my army should have come face to face with the sea and stopped and thus been at the mercy of the enemy if they chose to chase me and then force me to fight a battle, not take ym whole army away after choose to withdraw because it was the tactically sound thing to do, i should have been faced with a 'final stand' scenario where i enter a battle knowing i cannot walk away unless i secure victory, so maybe not a bug but it surely isn't logical. Not too annoyed as it makes my campaign more difficult but it was a veteran and favorite army. My two cents sick game haha
