Help run RTW with Vista

I pulled out my RTW disk today and installed it, but whenever I double-click on the icon it'll start to load the game but then go back to the desktop as if I minimuzed it or alt-tabbed out of the game. I'll click on the game on the taskbar, but it'll just go back to desktop, again and again. The same problem occurs if I right-click the game icon and try to run it as administrator.

At one point, I got it running and played the prologue, but then when I exited and later tried to play it some more the same problem occurred. I've tried just about everything I can think of... patching it up to 1.5, running it in all sorts of compatibility modes and settings, but nothing seems to work.

Please help! I really want to play this game again. It was a great game. Hopefully, since there's a ton of people on, someone will be able to help me.

Now about vista,
Are you logged in as Administrator?
Have you installed diectx 9.0c with the UAC disabled?
Do you have the icon set to "Run as Administrator" and "XP Compatible"?

Sorry, I've been at this all day and I'm getting frustrated. :|

Yes, I am logged in as an administrator (plus I keep trying to run it as an administrator).
I have DirectX 11 installed and UAC disabled. Do I need DirectX 9.0c specifically to run it? Wouldn't 11 work?
The "run as admin" option is greyed out in right-click > properties, but I keep running it as admin when I go to start it. And yes, I have it set as XP compatible.

You do need dx9. Dx11 is not that backward compatible. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displaylang=en

But will I be able to have DirectX 11 and 9 on my computer? Or?

They will live side by side. No problems. I've been doing it since Vista was released with dx10. Four years now?

Sorry but I don't do, either.

Uninstall, delete the Rome folders, run a registry cleaner like Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, reboot, and reinstall so it can find it. The installer is stone age.

Hm, when I uninstalled and ran the cleaner and rebooted, I tried to install DirectX 9 again and it said a newer or equal version was found and no install is needed. Did it get stopped because I already installed DirectX 9 once or because of 11? I don't remember if it said that the first time I installed DirectX 9...

It stopped because you do now have dx9 installed. This game is old enough to have its own quirks.

Yes, thank you very much, but something happened today.

All Saturday and all Sunday I was playing the game intermittently, which always worked no matter how much I turned the game off and on.

Today I started it and got the same go to desktop issue, but it worked again when I restarted my computer.

Does this happen to any of you?

It's been a long tme but I've had to restart my computer because of programs hitting a memory glitch including RTW. It does happen every so often.

And if I change any graphic setteings, will it screw it up?

That happened if I have an application (such as my browser) open while I try to start the game. Make sure you don't have any programs running other than RTW.
