Default The "let's cry about something" thread

I'm here to open my official cry-baby thread, where I will ***** about something that I don't like or think it's stupid.

Feel free to express your tears and whinning about anything related to electronics, computers, video, multimedia.

Everything here should be taken with a pinch of humor so please don't get offended.
    My first cry:

What is up with large games coming on 5-6 Cds lately? Who the hell likes swapping the damn cds around, just because the game is several gigabytes?

Recently the games i installed were half life 2, Farcry, Fable, Fear, all frickin' 4-5-6 CDs to swap around!!!

...and please WHO the hell does not have a simple DVD drive yet?
Can you please raise your hand?
    And why not?
Let me smack you with 19" monitor!

Why do we dvd-drive people have to suffer because of you cheap CD-drive people, since now they make a special DVD rom editon (can't find it most of the time) or don't make it at all and have to swap around the damn cds -up to 6 sometimes- to install a damn game. Makes me not want to play the game or ever reinstall again if something happens to my installation!

I mean - I think it's a load of BS, that companies trying "feel" for your poor financial situation by not being able to buy a 15 dollar (or euro) DVD drive and so let you keep working with your POS 6years old CD drive to play away, but Don't tell me that you were able to afford a nice graphics card or CPU for 200 bucks and even more, but you are too cheap to buy a 15 dollar DVD drive?

For the Gods of the PC gamers and computer users all around the world:

, is there a way, so small games that fit on a CD disk, put those on a CD disk...

BUT a damn 4-5 GB size of a game, just put it on a DVD and forget about 6 CDs? I mean, don't tell me that someone who has a computer able to run FEAR with the system requirements it needs (top of the line PC) still assume that he might "not" have a DVD drive?

Nonsense. Stupid. Annoying. I can't find words to describe this illogical idea.

Later, to be continued...... I'll post more of my whinning, but this is enough for now, since I have to swap a cd disk as I am installing a game and I have 3 more disks to go at the moment. ..

Well if you replace CDs with floppies then you have the same situation as 1991. Soon they will start putting out games on DVDs and all your problems will be solved.. until the games take 6 DVDs to install...
    Still here since December 2002

    No, Wild Bill! you misunderstand!

I meant Put them on DVD disks !!!!!

CD disk not equal DVD disk!

CD: 750MB of data (not even 1 GB)
DVD: 4.3 GB (single layer) 8.6 GB dual layer.

Example: Battlefield 2. I have it on 1 DVD disk. Nice, easy, no swapping no missing disks, 1 DVD disk.
I can't even imagine how many CDs it takes, probably 5, but I don't even want to know.

All games presently fit on one dual layer DVD. If not, it can't be bigger than 2 DVDs, and that's a lot. So choose:

6-7 CDs or 1 DVD disk.

My XBOX 360 crapped out on me!!!!
That's not a whine. That's your fault for buying a stupid console system.
No. 1 Rule with Consols: ( I know this since super nintendo times) NEVER buy first generation console. Wait until they fix
everything, since first generation hardware sucks. My playstation (the first one) crapped out after a few weeks and they wouldn't let me return it.
I heard a lot of XBOX 360 faulties (overheating etc) and I never considered getting one anyway. with a console, you have about maximum 3 years of usage, then you can throw it away, since it's outdated.
    Versus PC:
Once you cannot upgrade it anymore, you can always pass it to your mom or some friend who needs it for word processing and similar small task stuff , or your little brother to play some ancient PC games. He can also break the damn thing, since you got a new PC.
Not to mention, you can transfer some parts out of your old one, such as graphics card or sound card and your mouse/keyboard (DO NOT TRANSFER YOUR OLD GARBAGE CD DRIVE!)

Well the good news is that Microsoft is going to replace it for free. But still, it shouldn't have crapped out in the first place. The customer service guy I talked to was rather nice and helpful. So no complaints there. Right now I'm waiting for my prepaid empty box to arrive so that I can ship them my broken console.

    It's still frustrating though.

In regards to the PC comparison I can say a lot of positives about consoles. The first advantage consoles have are their price. Consoles are much cheaper compared to PCs. For example, if you want to buy a PC with the power of the 360, you would have to dish out well over $5,000. I spent $2,000 on my PC over a year ago and it's already outdated.

Also, with consoles, you don't have to worry about different game system requirements and upgrades and stuff.

You spend $400 on a console, use it for 3-4 years untill the next generation comes out and so forth.

What Wild Bill was talking about is that the size of games will steadily increase, and soon enough we'll be needing multiple DVDs to install/run games, just like in the 'good old days' of the early 90s (How many disks was King's Quest IV... 10?)

Although it's going to be a (short) while before game designers will begin to push the dual layered DVD envelope. But never underestimate the power of the ability to fill any and all available space. My own C:\ will speak volumes to that (no pun intended).

Soon enough we wont need dvd's etc at all.

Valves pushing its games via steam, EA's starting to follow suit with its own thing.

Pretty soon people are just going to quit going to town to get a game when they can download it for cheaper as theres no need for shipping etc....

omg where to start. firstly, i HATE consoles, its pc's fugly cousin. my ps2 proves that point. xbox 360 is cool now, but will be outdated in about a year.

um, i hate starforce, and the shadiness of ubisoft. remember them disabling modding capabilities with their last raven shield patch. other mentionable honors go to take 2 and CA. marketing and mainstreaming is killing the pc gaming industry(and consoles for that matter). companies spend more money on box art than on testing and developemnt there is no more creativity in the industry, the same trashy action titles are rolled over and over again. the last great game i played was deus ex 1, which was about 5 years ago. the only game i really play now is silent hunter 3 which is a real quality game to be released in some time. um, thats its for now.

ps. please dont call halo a great game because its not.

I can't believe how many people only have CD drives! I only have DVD drives. All my computers can read and write DVDs.
I also am amazed at how many people still use phone lines for their internet connection! I don't want to play multiplayer RTW with anyone if they will lag up and disappear for five minutes...

Oh yeah, my school's computers suck! They only have cheap CD drives and no floppy drives, so I can't save any large PSDs or anything and bring it home for homework like I have to.

I hate iPods. They are breakable, have a lot of bugs and the battery life sucks. They hold 1000's of songs, when I only need 50, and they use expensive flat batteries. I am never going to buy one. What is all the hype about? A fellow student put one in his pocket and dropped his coat on the ground. the iPod screen turned blue and is now useless.

Anyway, that is my technology bashing for today.
BTW, anyone have some money for an iPod?

Didn't Myst have something like 16 floppies? That was hilarious. Great game, still have the "collector's edition," but at least then there wasn't much other than floppies.

    Another crying of me:

Hard drives. It's old, it's the slowest mechanic part of our PC. It's slow, it's the bottleneck to your speed. It holds back the rest of the parts inside, since they all have to wait until it loads up the stuff. It wears down; breaks; will give you lot's of headache and it's never big enough.

WHEN, will we have just a large memory card instead? I'm talking about those that go into your digital camera, or on your keychain, those little memory modules.

difference : No moving parts. It's saved on a memory chip. It's fast, many many times faster loading than the mechanical hard drive. When will we have a 200GB memory card, where we can save up all our stuff? Or even bigger? We can even pull it out and take it to another place to use it on a different computer. When? WHEN? I'm tired of hard drives. They suck.

Why do there have to be so many wires all over the place inside your computer. I just spend way too many hours putting together a pc and having to deal with wires getting in the way. When will all of the hardware be wireless?

  14. #14

    Default

@DarkKnight, you use cable-ties to order your wires, or at least get them out of the way, and also, once you've done it once, it's a lot easier the next time, the annoying ones are the wires that connect to your case, power, reset switches, etc. (pliers help).
And wireless probaly won't happen for a long time, it's signals can get interfered with so easily.
@Archer on DVD's...they are called collector's editions, they need to be pre-ordered, cost more, and come with a bunch of useless junk, but they also have that DVD, but your point is right though, people who don't have DVD drives probaly have (well) outdate hardware.
On hard drives, give it a few years, once the technology becomes viable and affordable Seagate and co will jump on board (or die).
@H&G, you will find that console prices are pretty comparable to PC prices actually, as the hardware ages, the consoles become cheaper, and with consoles you dont have to pay for a monitor, etc, though a lot of money is made on console peripherals.
Think about it, you are paying a lot of money for two video cards and a cpu (with a very basic motherboard) for a console, on which you can only play games (and music, media). PC's pack a lot more.

My whinge, why are hardware prices in Australia so high compared to the US, and other Western countries, (exchange rate taken into account), and when will high speed internet prices (with decent unlimited plans) become affordable down here in the backwater of the world.

    @Honour & Glory

I've just built (well, waiting for the last part) a system that cost me $2,300 USD that should in theory (Havnt tested it out yet) be able to blow away a 360. Oh, and did I mention, it wont overheat?

    @Darkknight

My friends father has a couple parts in his computer that are wireless, supposedly

Heh yeah, I like titles that come on DVD, I really dont know why people still use CD drives, I have 2 dvd RW drives, because they were so cheap.

My beef is with people who dont even bother taking the time to learn simple things and look after thier computers properly. How hard is it do run spybot every now and then, or a virus check? why do you need someone to install a printer for you? I wish some people would just take the damn time to learn a few simple things, instead of finding the first tech savvvy person they know and bugging the **** out of them to solve thier trivial little problem that takes 4 seconds to fix. Archer:

I don't have a DVD-drive. But it should be easy to locate most games in DVD format, and I'm glad they're not completely switching over to DVDs yet. Call me cheap, but I just don't have the money to get a DVD drive when I'm saving every cent for a new computer anyway... why waste?

And BF2 is only 3 CDs, and you only have to use one after install, so what difference does it make?

Modern games on CD's? At least in Sweden all major games in the last years havs been released on DVD, if required ie. it would otherwise be more that 2 CD's.
Only exeption I can think of is NFS:Most Wanted with 4CD's.

BattleField 2 wasn't that bad on on CDs, I think it was only 3, but Half Life 2 and Call of Duty 2 was a beast.
