So far everything has gone smoothly, except for there still are a bunch of cables I still don't know what they do- mostly the ones coming from the power supply.

Does one of the 4 pin connectors (big pins I might add) coming from the psu connect to the harddrive? Does one of the HDD cables have to connect to the harddrive?

Does the soundcard need a cable hooked up to it from the power supply?

Reading through the manuel for the mobo, it shows a 5 pin thing in the bottom right corner. It says 3 of those pins should be connected to a reset switch cable. The problem is that the reset switch coming from my case only is 2 pin.
The 3 pins listed in the manual are: GND, RSTSW, and NC, in that order. Is it ok if I just plug my 2 pin connector into just the GND and RSTSW or the RSTSW and the NC?

Cables: if they look like that they fit, then they probably are meant to go together.

Don't worry, the cable from powersupply is keyed, there is no way you are going to mess it up (Unless you really force it in there). The 4 pin connector connects to pretty much every component (Hard drive/CD ROM/Fans...etc) Thats the one with 2 black wire in middle and 1 red wire on one side and one yellow wire on the other side. You also got a 6 pin connector which is the Pci Express connector, it connects to your Geforce 7800GT, and the 24 pin is for the mobo, and another 4 pin for the CPU.

Heres a great article on different type of connectors:

Ok I am setting up the BIOS now. The system temp is at 100F and the processor temp is at 95F. Is this normal or should I be worried?

    DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!! :sign_woot

This thing runs like a dream. I just tried playing my first game on the computer. I loaded up CivIV. On my old computer I have to put all the lowest settings on and stuff like that, and it takes like 10 minutes to load a huge game. Literally I have sometimes gone downstairs for a snack while I load my Civ games lol. I kicked all the settings up to the max on my new comp, and loaded a huge game in 10 seconds. Then everything ran really smooth too. On my old computer it would get laggy, and occasionally freeze up for a couple seconds. I just love my new computer

    One question:
I have started to overclock in small amounts. My motherboard defaulted my RAM timings to 2-3-3-8 so I changed them to what the package said they are (2-2-2-6). It seems to be stable (I plan on running Prime95 overnight to make sure). Then I increased the processor to 2.36GHz. After that the processor and system temps are about 107-111F. At what temperature should I stop overclocking?

General rule of thumb is that (AMD) CPU temp should be under (or in the 50's) 50 degrees Celsius (122F) on full load.
Though processors can handle above 60C there is risk invovled, and it is not really good for the processor in the long run (then again Overclocking isnt meant to be either but the high temps are what cause problems).
Keep in mind that on hot days the temperature can go up more than 10 degrees compared to cool days (in Australian summer anyway).

Of course if you plan to overclock as much as possible, watercooling (or better...but I'd say watercooling) is a must after a certain point, air cooling can only do so much.

I'm glad your first build went by without any trouble, usually its the first time that matters the most A good first time experence is crucial

I've been following this thread and DarkKnight's last one where he bought all the parts for his computer. I'm thinking about upgrading myself in a couple of months. Glad your machine works so well with Civ IV, but how does it run Rome?

Saying it works well with CIV 4 isn't saying much. CIV 4 runs on my 300 dollar computer like some very slick butter. I would say the greatest test of a computer would be hearts of iron II in 1944. Any computer that can run that without slowing down have earned my respect.

I say the greatest test would be a 15000 men battle in RTW, or even better a 34000 men battle. Even my computer can't handle 34000 men without being a slide show!

I never really liked RTW, I come to this forum for MTW. Of course a large factor of that is because it ran like  on my computer. Maybe Ill find it more enjoyable if I don't have an annoying mouse lag.

Well, that test would merely test the video card, which isn't that important, in my humble opinion, as I can't tell bewteen 800*600 and 1600*1200 when I am gaming (I own a 19inch CRT). The CPU is much more important because many, many wargames go really slowly because of a CPU bottleneck.

Actually CIV IV is a pretty good test of your rig - especially in the late stages of the game.

As for your RAM timings - I hope you ran memtest afterwards! If you simply changed the timings and nothing else, you may run into some problems. Run test 5 and 8 a few times to make sure everything is good to go. You may need to increase the voltage a wee bit to make the tighter timings stable.

How to I run Memtest? I burned the iso onto a cd and configured my bios to boot from the cd. But it said that the cd was not bootable.

I wouldnt bother with over clocking at this stage, especialy since youve said everything runs as well as you want it to. Overclokig increases the chances of something getting damaged, and shortens all your components life expectency..
