    Default POLL: defensive level per race - help for some major changes

    Hi there.

    I am working on some major changes in the game structure based in the new settlement system, and I need some help from the users.

    I need to have your opinion about the level of defensive skill for culture(s) in LOTR-TW.

    Please vote the poll and if you want detail the reason of your choice or comment for the race you know better the specific motivations to say they have a good or bad or average defensive capacity. Detailed explanations will help me a lot more then the simple vote.

    NOTES:
    - multiple vote is allowed, so you can select more then one race if you think they both have a good defense
    - please consider the group of factions included in the culture group when voting
    - please consider to vote for the factions you know better and have extensively plaid with: assumptions will be misleading there

    my vote goes for Dwarfs and Elves....and now reason is that the dwarfs have mines,galleries under earth and for example Moria without help from Balrog wouldn't be conquered by goblins...beacuse that i think dwarfs need a good defense.A nother good example is:you are in a darkness room and a little dwarf from nowhere release an arrow or an axe you can't see it and you cannot see again the sun

    Now for the elves i don't know about all elves but i know that Lothlorien elves have bigger tree(i can't remember name but i think it's mallorn or something like that) where they have house and can easly release rain of arrow from there + they have good eyes and can kill many orcs

    In my opinion the defensive abilities should be:

    Dwarves > Elves > Dunedain > (Northern = Evil Men) > Orcs


    Dwarves have their fortresses and mighty engineering skill, elves have their trees and camouflage, dunedain generally have forts of a slightly lower level of quality than dwarves, northern and evil men aren't really known for their ability to build mighty defensive structures and orcs are made for offence rather than defence. That's how I see it


    So to summarise the defensive capacity:

    Dwarves = excellent
    Elves = excellent/good
    Dunedain = good
    Northern/Evil men = average
    Orcs = bad

    I'd said Dwarves and Elves

    Dwarf are the best construction workers, and should be able to build major fortifications by their own.

    Elves aren't really fond of fortifications, relying mostly on natural defenses, but they have been proven to build well fortified cities in the past

    Gondorian are ok by being sightly good

    Northmen didn't mind much with defenses, they shouldn't be able to build walls of stone on their own, except Dale maybe (Eorls prefer meeting their enemies on the field, and Dunlendings... well).

    Easterling should be able to build major fortifications, they almost rival gondor, but the Haradrim, should be able to build that in some cities (umbar coasts and harandor), but not in their desert hinterland

    I guess I didn't explain what I meant clearly.
    I was not asking who would you *expect* to be stronger in defense, I was asking which factions/cultures *are* actually stronger in defense in LOTR-TW mod as it result from your gaming experience.
    I need it because I have not played extensively with many races (out of testing purposes I only play orcs factions due to my actual nature).

    Not saying that such discussion isn't interesting, but its not what I need here.

    dwarves, their infantry is immobile so they just hold the streets. too easy. Elves slaughter orcs before they get to them and if they do, then the gens guard can take them out.

    thats a good point, but isn't that what the forest bonuses for?? unless you could make orcs take a huge morale drop if they fight in elven woods??

    well.. in fact, as the towers does not work in the mod (and i like this feature), assaulting a faction is not that big problem. but when you fight on the walls, unit strengths are so important.

    mordor and goblins are really weak when defending, as they have no strong infantry (compared with good factions). they have trolls, but trolls can't defend the walls, and they are an easy target when you capture the walls and put there some archers. btw, in rtw engine, ai puts 2 or 3 units on the walls, and never sends more during the battle, all the units wait for you to get in the city.

    as it is about the unit strength, dwarves are the most defendable faction in the game (i'm talking about when ai controls them), for their units are few in number but great in strength. they can kill anyone when defending on the narrow area of the walls..

    so it is about infantry and archer strength for ai to use defences. so as my guess, isengard, gondor, easterlings and elves are quite strong against assaults (elves are usually not that strong as they always have few stacks in the game, but with the reinforcement script, they are good).

    and nothern people are bad. dunlending, rohan and free people shave only wooden walls. rohan has some fortificated cities, but have weak infantry, and ai never charges horsemen rightly when defending cities.

    so, i guess that was what you were asking
