    Default Forts?

I was just wondering how many people on here actually use forts in large numbers on a campaign. Im playing the Roman Republic in RTR, and ive just taken a small foothold on Greece, and was wondering if building forts at the choke points into the province and garrisoning them with a half-stack or so for preliminary defense.

I've started using them in SPQR since the Gaul city I just captured can only be attacked through two passes, so Im putting a fort on one and an ambush on the other.

i usually do not use forts as i always try to move my armies foreward and i do not make stops on my way. i make lots of watchtowers but i do not stop my armies and make forts as they cost a lot more and i always try to kill my anemies andi do not play defence much. my strategy could be wrong, but generally speaking it works for me.

my experience of forts is that the AI will siege them but not atack, so they would just starve your army without a fight. thats why i dont peronally use them, i just stand an army at a chokepoint so they either fight me or go another way.

I like to use them a lot. MOstly for holding choke points but also for cities that are under siege constantly. I'll put a fort by the city so I can keep most of my forces there , then I don't have to worry about sallying forth. I also have one in the middle of sicily where my legion stays to protect the entire island.

hmmmm ... i find that really expensive... isnt it better you keep armies in town so they also keep your towns happy (so PO is a bit higher?) ... =/

once you get your economy set in a campaign, the 500 denari for each fort should not be that bad of a drain on your economy. And once a city has been under your rule for 5 or 6 years, you can usually have a small garrison and it will stay happy. My garrisons with Rome in cities not on my borders are 3 infantry (principes usually) 2 archers, and a unit of cavalry (sometimes a general unit, but usually my generals are constantly on campaign on my borders)

Actually, I'm playing SPQR 6.00 where forts are 100 denari so the cost is not bad at all.

I dislike using forts because you will lose men to starvation over a few turns and there is not a lot of maneuvering space in them. I prefer to put my forces on high ground and let the enemy attack me so that I have an advantage.

Well, fort is quite expensive right, but the good thing is your enemy needs to siege it... so if your army is mainly the range units, then fort may be can do its job.
