Default Bayonet charges in VH/VH difficulty

Is it just me, or are bayonet charges totally pointless against the AI playing on VH difficulty? They have so much morale that they don't break even in steady status, and you lose tons of men from their laser-accurate fire during the charge. I tried attacking some thinned out Prussian skirmishers (58/90) with a fresh unit of grenadiers, and by the time they closed range my grenadiers were down to 40ish.

Cavalry are still effective since you can disengage after the charge bonus is spent, but infantry melee seems totally ineffective.

Historically bayonet charges rarely went home, one sight of a large force charging at you with sharp pointy things after you've been decimated by musket fire has a tendency to make people want to run.

still, i completely agree that taking the cold steel to the enemy is damned hard on VH/VH you litterally need to whittle them to a quarter of their size at least, which is kind of long winded.
if you are going to charge try and do it from short range, don't give them time to put anymore volleys into you.

alternatively have one unit engage their front and another charge their flank.
