The problem here is bound to be because you're trying to run Rome Total War in Windows 7 with a 64bit processor. Try changing your shortcut to Rome Total War on the desktop to run in Windows XP compatibility mode - right click it Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP. There's a number of issues why it wouldn't work smoothly/crash/lag in 64bit Windows 7, but it's a fix that work for most having issues in that context.

Right click Rome Total War under your games list in Steam, click "Create Desktop Shortcut." - then right click the shortcut on the desktop that's been created and change compatibility to Windows XP. Run the game through the shortcut - see if it helps!

Sorry for slow response! Workies waits for no one!

Yeah I foolishly forgot that you're running Windows 7 - if you find the Rome Total War .exe file in your steamapps folder (Wherever you installed Steam) you can use that to create a shortcut using the add shortcut wizard in Windows 7 of which will allow you to change the compatibility mode to Windows XP. Honestly I'm no expert when it comes to Windows 7 being a giant fan of Linux, but I know there's been problems running Rome Total War with a 64bit processing system in Windows 7, so running it in compatibility mode for XP should by the logic of everything I've read work.

You're welcome. If it doesn't solve the lag issues let us know sir!

Hey, I'm a little late to this thread but I've tried using compatibility mode and I just get the message "Failed to find steam" when I try to run the game. Any ideas as to why?

I just ran Steam as Administrator and i have been playing RTW for a while now. Everything seems to work fine if I do that. No problems, no crashes. Maybe that will fix some problems if you haven't tried that yet.
