Default RS II MP Light Version

    Hi Team,

I'm wondering if someone here would like to help me to make a more compact version of RS II that only includes battles, without all that cumbersome campaign data. This way it could be modfoldered as well. Have received som positive feedback from the online community regarding this idea as many simply thinks that RS II is too big to download for someone who is not interested in campaigns.

Unfortunately, because of the way RTW works, you cannot access any kind of battles thru a modfolder. Tried to figure out how to, but it seems the EXE is the obstacle.

Unless if they only want the battles, cut away all the campaign folders and just leave the normal rome one, convert that to MP?

The individual campaign folders make up very little of the 'girth' of RS2. For example, the largest modfolder is the Roman Campaign, and that's only 31MB...most are much smaller. They maybe are 1/4 of the RS2's size.
So the biggest part of RS2 is the main part that installs in the normal RTW folders.

Ah yeah, a massive amount is the music.
Im not sure what would happen, but is it possible to remove the music and still have a functioning game?

Wouldn't simply removing the campaign folders mean the .exe would scan for things that were not there and simply crash? Don't wanna lose the music, so the map is really a small part of the size? What's the big part, the textures?

No...its the sum of the different files the engine needs to function....they are mostly small but there are truckloads of them...

The data folder of vanilla RTW is over 2GB and contains hundreds of different files on different levels...
I doubt that we can remove files to reduce the data weight considerably
Example....for MP you would not need the campaign map or the descr_strat.txt or the export_descr_buildings.txt files but without them you cant launch the game and the attempt do to so would only result in an error message...

nearly all files are connected or have references towards other files...removing just one of hese connections in the file structure and the game does not work...

Im afraid but what you ask Is impossible...

The 'data' folder of the RS2 install is roughly 1.5GB. The total size of RS2 is 2GB. Therein lies the issue.

Really? My RS II folder is 7 GB big and I have not sub mods or anything like that installed.

Because you've got to include RTW/BI/ALEX files too.
