    Default Socket 939 or 754

I got a $500 budget PC that I'm going to build for a friend, I'm at the process of choosing a processor for him, since its a budget PC a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ is the best bang for the buck, but when I saw the prices the one for socket 754 costs $120 while the one for socket 939 costs $160, which one is the best? Is there any drawbacks for socket 754?

A overclocked skt 939 is going to shattered a overclocked skt 754, other then that, no visible difference.

Socket 939 is the better choice - 754 is old school, but others still sing its praises. I am sure lee will come along and say it's the better choice for a budget PC - not something I disagree with, but I still think the extra 40 bucks may be worth it in the long run.

EDIT - lol - he beat me to it

With SKT 939, you can use dual channel ram. The SKT 754 one is faster in that it have a 200mhz lead. At stock, the two evens out, pretty much. But you save 40 dollars that can be used to boost performance else where. Still, if I were you, I would hunt down a used Athlon XP 3000, the SKT A one.

Oh by the way - is that 160 US? Surely they can be had cheaper than that, no?

If it's a budget PC, I doubt quality dual channel ram would be an integral componenet, so I don't know what benefit your buddy would see with S939...although I still think the 939 is the best option!

wrong, 200mhz clockspeed lead won't make it faster than the one that has the SAME PR RATING 939 processors

I though the Athlon64 3000+ for 939 would be cheaper too, but I guess not. Well I choose all the parts for him and I'm $40 overbudget, It includes an $99 X800GT and the $160 socket 939 Athlon64 3000+ with a $40 case and a $40 powersupply, a $69 nForce 4 mobo (The cheapest nForce 4 mobo avilable), and a pair of 1 gig G.Skill dual channel ram for $75. I think the best way to cut that $40 is to buy a $40 case that comes with a powersupply, but I don't know which case come with a quality powersupply that really works, anyone got any suggestions? Lee I know you are using the powersupply that comes with your case, can you show me which one that is?

No problem, it is this one:

The two chips should be the same speed either way.

keep in mind that to use the dual channel memory on the s939 platform you are going to have to buy at least 2 sticks of prefreably identical RAM sticks
