    Default What partition sizes should I set for my 60GB SSD for dual boot?

    I recently got a new SSD and am planning to put it into my machine within the next week or so. I'm planning to put in a copy of Windows 7 and Ubuntu as a dual boot. I have heard that this drive has less actual space than the 60GB advertised and was wondering what partition sizes I should set for each OS? The one thing I'm worried about somewhat is that with Ubuntu, you cannot specify where programs get installed, so all programs will be on the SSD. I don't want to be in a situation where I allocated too little early on and then run into a problem a year or two down the line.

    Also, other than firefox, what commonly used programs do you install on your SSDs? I want to keep my list pretty small and just to stuff that I use on a daily basis.

    Thanks everyone

    I install all my programs on my SSD. Granted irs 120gb

    I have only the necessary programs there:

    office 2010
    chrome
    mse
    S2tw
    world in conflict
    the secret of monkey island
    visual studio 2010 ultimate
    borland c++
    vmware workstation'

    all this consumes 70gb + 20g for every VM

    your drive should have available 49gb if I remember correctly, so install your most needed programs, and only you can tell which

    Put Windows on the SSD and Ubuntu on a second HDD. Its just too little space for both. If I were you I'd set part of the second HDD aside for Windows as well.

    Windows 7 takes up way to much space to dual partition that small a drive effectively or at least if you plan on playing games with that anyways. I learned that much when dual partitioning with Windows and Linux with about 40GB of space. If you're not planning on playing games on the drive or using sizable programs then try and give windows about 2/3s of the drive since it's the space hog(as far as I know anyways my Ubuntu experience is limited).
