Quick battles, land, siege and naval all separate should make a comeback.
Ability to trade provinces with another faction such as an ally.
Bring diplomats back.
Lancers should be effective against armour, but only while charging. The great momentum of a horse behind a single sharp point could pierce any armour.
Javelin cavalry should have their charge bonus apply to their missile weapon but only if they are charging towards their target. A foot soldier will throw a javelin with much less force than a soldier who is moving towards a target at high speed. This is why javelin throwers would do a run up.
Ranged units should get a range bonus on a hill.
Slingers should b able 2 use heated clay shot that is weak against units but can set ships and wooden structures on fire during sieges etc.
Different ship types should be capable of holding different amounts of men and none should be able to hold a full stack. Ramming action should be included. Ships should travel at 3 speeds: cruising speed, chase speed and ramming speed. Higher speed is unsustainable for long periods as it tires out the galley slaves, but cruising speed is sustainable for the whole battle.
Men lose morale if they have lost many previous battles. If your faction as a whole is losing the war badly, all units rout a little easier but veterans should be unaffected. However, a single major victory can give a large morale boost to all units for a few turns. Also, happier populations should make troops with slightly better morale then unhappier populations. Units might overall need higher morale than in Shogun 2 for it to work well.
