If a player is above lvl5, it is very easy to have great guard and katana heroes unlocked. Assuming he won most of his games.
I had all units unlocked by the middle of lvl5.

I do enjoy scaring the newbies with katana heroes.

Pretty much the reason why I hardly ever play multiplayer in any game anymore since those that played it more are given huge unfair advantages over those that are still new to it or have less time for it. Its not very encouraging.

matchmaking is better during peak hours. but I agree it sucks to face people who have a wider unit selection.

Hahahaha, it doesn't take long to get what everyone else has. Especially if you're decent at this game. There are also slight disadvantaged that come with being a higher rank. In the end, it just comes down to who makes the better tactical decisions overall.

Katana heroes are 1600 points though. And I think you have to use up a retainer slot also.

No you dont have to use a retainer slot. Essentially because of the high price of them, they are only justifiable in large land battle games where you are almost out of slots and dont have space for the ashigaru or katana units, but in smaller battles they will get swarmed and overrun. They are also actually very useful in siege matches tho when your attacking because they is so few of them to climb the walls, so the whole unit gets up there quick.

I even use them in small battles, although that means that I can only have 3 units...they still win my battles for me. Unless of course, the enemy uses matchlock units...then I'm screwed.

Heh, thats why i dont use them in small battles. I dont want to risk it. I would much rather have 5 units of ashigaru.

But to help relieve the pressure from the matchlocks in big matches, especially in siege matches, what i like to do is hide them in a unit of ashigaru. Have the ashigaru take the the fire from the matchlocks, while you charge both of them at a unit or have both of them climb the same wall. By the time the ashigaru reach their target they will probably break, but the heroes would reach their targets fairly if not enitirely intact.
