So I should treat them like a slightly better version of Lugoae?

    Surprisingly Good

Leukanoi Aichemetai - These guys are like peltastai but with spears. They're not as durable but they manage to last through some situations that Akontistai will not survive.

These units are a mystery to me. The las time I used them was in my former seleukid campaign.

I sent 2 units onto the wall to distract a full unit of Marian's and they shocked the hell out of me when they actually beat them. I thought since the Marian's were swordsmen they would dominate these guys ( especially on a wall) but I was wrong.

In the next siege I sent 2 units of southern Gallic swordsmen Mercs to do the same but they got crushed.

They're excellent for tying up cavalry, they have surprisingly high morale and they just don't die despite their lowish stats.

Agrianian Assault Infantry: I want to love these guys but I just can't. I've been playing Makedonia almost exclusively for 2 years. I use one of these units in every stack. I use them in reserve to hit an enemy in the back when pinned or to rush to a critical point.
They almost always have a lousy kill ratio. I end up with roughly a 1:1 kill/casuality ratio.
I have much better success with Thrakian peltasts.
Yeah, these guys are just outclassed, Thrakians are just much better for flanking with their .26 lethality AP swords and extra, longer range javelins, and there are better/cheaper wall assault / imitation legionnaire units (Samnite Heavy Infantry).

Illyrian Light Cavalry are surprisingly good, their stats are low, but they have a lot of stamina and speed, their charge is devastating, and their AP axes let them tear through engaged enemy heavy cav.

If only Lucanians had skirmish mode, I would love them. As they are now, I don't know how to use them. Too light for front row work, not good enough for flanking - I have sword-bearing units for that or just use Thureophoroi instead. Maybe I will use them to protect skirmishers off to the side and hope I can lure some light cavalry in a trap - Lucanians hide in forests quite well.

I use them as peltasts that are tanky enough to withstand enemy cavalry. You don't really need skirmish mode because they can stay in melee long enough for you to send your flanking units to help save them. You can also use them to guard your flanks against enemy cav. They don't do a lot of damage but they're decently cheap and very flexible. They're basically cheap Thureophoroi.

    Surprisingly Good:

Rorarii - Despite usually losing 40% of their number from skirmishers before actual combat begins, these guys can hold lines very well in guard mode even against high-tier units. Later on when reforms come in I start using them to support my cavalry because they run pretty fast and by then they usually have silver or gold chevrons.

Illyrian Levies - At first I thought, " Geez, loose formation, low stats, these guys are going to be throwaway units". NOPE. Sure they get shot to death pretty easily but they can CATCH slow cavalry, skirmishers, etc and WHACK them to death with those AP clubs that they have. Elite phalangitai and neitos? Flank with Illyrian Levies and watch as they receive concussions and brain damage that your Triarii/Hastati/Legionnaires can never hope to achieve.
