i simply cant get rome total realism to run

hey guys, i have zero modding experience, however i do have several hundred hours of total war dating back to shogun (the original). anyways, like the title says, i found rome total realism and wanted to try it. i downloaded the patches like it said, then downloaded and installed rtr platinum 1.9. when i've tried to run it all i'm getting is a graphic icon in a slideshow (i'm not joking.) so then i hit my forehead and try to just run rome. no options for mods, i shrug and start a campaign, no change. so, maybe i'm stupid, but i'm lost, any help would be appreciated, thanks guys.

Welcome to the boards, mate. You'll be wanting the RTRPE forum for that question, though.

Personally, here's what I recommend:
1) Make a clean install of Rome: Total War and then patch it.
2) Copy the directory and make a backup clean copy
3) Use the ExRM installer by BladeRunner900. It'll do the work for you and install a more advanced mod based on RTRPE. (RTRPE hasn't been updated in several years now.)
4) Rock on.
