Default How do you use Hero Units?

Well, I for my part use them for choke points. They are so strong that they cut through the enemy forces like a hot knive trough butter.
But I don't let my Katana Heroes stay on there own against other units. I usually mix them up with my infrantry because they are nearly invincible 1vs1 combat.
Staying on there own is risky and causes unnecessary casualties.

I utilise them generally in such a fashion that they are capable of using their impressive level of skill to maximum effect. This would entail using them against the appropriate unit type (Swords vs Spears) and to avoid exposing them to missile fire at all expense while also shielding their flanks with fairly expendable Ashigaru.

By the time I can recruit them the campaign is over. In both my finished campaigns the map was one color, which means that there were no enemies left.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

Are you playing Clan Games? Then you should try public out!
As good as heroes are, I can't stand heaving bow heroes or yari heroes in my setup.
The bow heroes surely are the best bowmen and really good for sniping but I think they are a waste of money like the yari heroes. Why should I bring yari heroes to the field if the normal yari samurai do a fairly good counter to cav.
    I'll stick with katana heroes.

    Same.

I actually don't think I've ever gotten a hero unit in a campaign. I just don't focus on getting them and they're so hard to get.

So true, 4 the time you invest not worth it at all. I now use Radious Technology Mod, makes the game more fun and the computer builds legendary buildings now.

Take out enemy generals...That's what I use my bow heroes for.

I've never built up one of those buildings to high enough level to recruit one... it seems like it takes too much time to get that high.

I think it would be a good idea to keep them with a couple high defense naginata units so they're really hard to overwhelm and covered against cavalry. The naginatas reduced effectiveness vs infantry should be more than made up for by the heroes ridiculous killing power.

As for what to actually do with them, I'd say front lines just because that's where it's most important to hold and where you'll always have enemies to grind up with them, but they would also work well as a hammer in a hammer and anvil strategy.

I've had all 3 but so far have actually only used the bow hero in combat. They're pretty good, but since they're not that many of them they're arguably less effective than you might think (than, say, an accuracy upgraded monk unit). The bow hero's greatest strength is that he's got double the ammunition than any other archer unit.

Having a naginata unit on each flank sounds like a pretty good way to keep any of the heroes safe.

I like to have them dress up as Geisha and dance for me, but then again I do like that kind of thing

The way I tech up in campaign, after I get a confucian academy (which is my priority 1) I generally try to go for legendary katana heroes. I can usually get them by early 1570 or late 1560's and I try to get them before starting realm divide.

The katana heroes are awesome in campaign land battles whether you flank or have them in the center of your main line's charge - they'll just kill anything they come into contact with. As long as they're not flanked expect them to kill lots of enemy wherever you put them.

My favorite use for them are in siege battles with sabotaged gates. While everyone else climbs the walls, my katana heroes plus 1 katana samurai unit will rush the gates. Once they get inside, turn on banzai and use inspire on them with your general and just watch the bodies fall

    This

Seriously, if you run your Hero and maybe another squad of Samurai into the gate, the AI goes mad sending its whole army at you, and then the rest of your army runs up the back door...
