Icon5 Does becoming Shogun mean anything?

I just conquered Kyoto and held it for a year, I got the nice little video of the new Takeda Shogunate, but apart from that video there doesn't seem to be anything else to be gained from becoming Shogun.

I expected at the very least some of the clans who declared war on me after Realm Divide would request peace after their whole reason for declaring war on me in the first place died with the Ashikaga Shogunate?

They didn't, in fact the only people who aren't at war with me are my vassels.

Are there really no perks to becoming Shogun? It seems odd considering it's the main goal of the campaign and even the title is 'Shogun 2 Total War'.

I suppose it's just pretty anti-climactic when your entire military campaign has been to get to Kyoto and become THE SHOGUN, and it apparently doesn't mean anything in the end, you might as well just be a regular old Daimyo because you actually have more respect when you're a Daimyo than when you're Shogun.

Well isn't it the goal of the game? When you've finished it, what do you want perks for?

Yes, and usually when you spend time trying to achieve something for a goal, you expect to gain something at the end of it.

You gained the prestige of knowing you`ve beaten everyone else and are stronger, better and smarter than everyone else. Is that not reward enough? You need a pat on the head as well?

Why is that these kids always need a lollipop to go with anything they do? Is the achievement not enough in itself?

    Exactly.

I remember the times in STW, when I won my first campaign I started jumping up and down and watching in amazement the superb CGI video of the statue of my daimyo in the middle of Tokyo.

    Epic.

You do get some boni, which you can look up under the clan overview and you can recruit a new cav unit and a new ship. So, it's not just an empty title.

The Nihonmaru can crush any heavy bune in its way.

Protect it with 4-5 medium bune and bow ships, there's an invincible fleet right there. (Black ship excluded lol).

The shogun is more powerful than the emperor. He is just there for show.

Not really, as the Emperor had been powerless since Minamota Yoritoma became Shogun in the 12th century (except for the failed Kenmu Restoration in the 14th century).

You get respect and a giant ego. And then you die and it's all for nothing.

Check your family info page, you get several bonuses from being shogun including a better global tax rate. You also get the special cavalry and ship units.

    You get:

Super Heavy Bune of Doom (and 2 bowships)
Guard Cavalry (and 2 cavalry dudes)
    +10% global tax
    Kyoto
Your clan name changes to X Shogunate (So, Oda Shogunate for example)

Plus you get a point of honor iirc, and you win the game.

And then most (if not all) of the that is nullified by the -200 to your diplomatic relations left over from RD

You said you became shogun with Takeda. Congratulations you now have the most powerful cavalry unit in the game, the Takeda Great Guard. They're basically the Hero horse unit and you can only have two at any given time. I would say that is a good reward.

Except it doesn't work so you only get one generic Great Guard unit.
