    Default annex or allied state?

I'm new to this mod and I am not completely sure yet how it works. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a decent guide yet.

So the most important question I have is how to determine wheter to annex a city or make it an allied state. I guess I can recruit Roman (not auxilia) units only in annexed cities. But Capua, Arminium, Arretium and the other Italian cities are allied states. Does this mean I have to change it in order to be able to recruit republican cohorts?

    No.

Allied Client States allow you to draw on the local populace for troops whereas Annex Region gives you a sizeable trade bonus but a steep law penalty. This is to simulate the fact that Roman client states and allies were required to provide Rome with troops and tribute, whereas regions that are being directly annexed by Rome are often times in politically hot spots that needed direct Roman supervision.

You can recruit Roman units with the "Roman Oppidum - Provincial" built in Italian, Sicilian, and Punic Isle cities. In other cities, you will need a "Campus Martius"

IMO the Annex Region is always the choice to make, simply because the economic benefits and you can handle the law and unrest penalty very easily. I think there is no much of a choice there.... The client state does not offer better bonuses.

Hi! I've been abroad a lot and I have too much to study. But I keep an eye on the forum when I have time.

as for the allied units: I'm a legion fan, I prefer the legionares

    it is simple to handle.

in economic important places, with mines, harbour etc. you settle an annex region.
settle a client state onto a region that has mostly no resources. so tax loss keeps low.

strategic view is, settle 1-2 client regions (troops) onto 1 big region.
    example hispania.
2 client regions at total. mostly 1 you start with and other one into south/central part of hispania (looking forward the cathagian battles, but not new carthago due its eco importance)
i used a ratio of 5 annex to 1 client region around.

    cya.

So is it wise to change cities like Capua to annex then, because in vanilla and other mods it was one of my main income cities?

Arretium makes some of the most money in Italy, Capua is pretty average.
