Default unit editing with pfm possible?

Because it is possible to edit the value of some stats in the land_units_table, I tried to edit the units and improved cavalry. Then I saved it and I started a new game. But it seems that it doesn't work. For the test I made the cavalry unit bigger (from 60 men to 90men and horses), but they have still the same amount of men in one unit as in vanilla.
Is it possible to edit the unit stats directly in pfm without extracting single files and I only did anything wrong, or have I to use this complex method with a hex editor?

I just did a quick test with editing unit sizes in unit_stats_land, and it worked fine. I think your problem may be from the pack type - when you are making a pack with the modified table, make you sure set the pack type to movie, otherwise the game won't automatically load the changes.
