    Default Black Ship worth it?

Is that thing worth it at all? I had captured one yesterday, randomly, from the Tokugawa, and my reaction was "hell yes, Black--holy , 1200 upkeep?!"
That is basically an entire fleet, or half a stack. Kind of wondering whether it's worth keeping... I'm mid-game, so my monthly income (not total) is only (actually, was ) something like 3000.

It basicly destroys an entire fleet in combat by itself so yes it is worth it...

    Seems it does

It's a nice trophy, but definitely not worth it.

Two nanban trade ships together are at least as good, at half the maintenance (2 x 250). Of course, you can only get them as christian.

I see... thanks. I suppose I'll have to keep it 'cause I'm too greedy to scuttle it, eh. I'd sell it to some faction, but diplomacy doesn't have that in this game... damn.

I think you can get them as Buddhist also if you are lucky enough to capture a province with a Nanban Quarter but this is pretty rare.

I agree that two nanban trade ships are as effective as a black ship though (at less than half the upkeep of one black ship too), especially since you'll only be fighting naval battles against Japanese ships usually, it's very rare for the AI to ever capture black ships or produce their own nanban trade ships.

Nope, I'm afraid you can't do this. I built a Nanban Quarter while Christian, switched back to being Buddhist, and saw that while I still had the Nanban Quarter, I could no longer build or ships or the cannons.

Capture AI nanban quarter, not build it by yourself. I can build nanban trade ship when playing as Mori (Budhdist), after i capture nanban quarter from Christian faction.

I might be worth it if your Buddhist and still have naval competition from other clans.

    Its up to you really.

If you're seeing large AI fleets moving around threatening your trade lanes, and you're not Christian, it might be worth it, as it can destroy many times its own upkeep value without having to dock for repairs. If all the AI ever sends at you is token fleets of Sengoku Bune and Kobaya, along with a few random trade ships, then you probably don't need that expensive a solution.

I love blowing up stuff with it. And 1200 upkeep doesn't bother me, Black Ship lets me work with fewer ships than I would've build anyways. The arrows and boarding is stupid, blowing holes in other ships with cannons rules. Loved it in ETW/NTW, love it here too

When you got Nanban ships then you surely dont need it.

And since you need 2 decent sized fleets to capture a Black ship (at least thats what i needed to get one) you can surely doubt if that investment coundt been spend better on other options, and also the earlier in the game the more use the Black ship can give you but that also means you have to invest real early in a decent sized fleet to capture it, and early in the game you rather invest in economy and/or armys instead of fleets.
Capturing it late in a game when your strenght on land is allready large and most likely growing then its more a nice little extra that you dont really need anymore at that point.

Should you get one then you can deal with any enemy fleet with ease.
Only you still end up with just 1 ship and therby only 1 place you can be at each turn wich can very well mean that you still need more navy in order to protect yourself at more then 1 place at a time.

Putting all the facts together i really doubt its worth all of it.

I captured it with one fleet of about 8 ships or so.

I leave the black ship to defend my monopoly of cotton, silk, and incense.

Rest of my fleet (2 in total) guard the East and West coasts of Japan.

It's worth it, use it with bowships, their bunes will be ripped to shreds.

I captured it for fun but it took a fleet of 8 including the nihon maru.

Anybody else find the Black Ship to be a wee bit overly cartoonish. I mean the thing is like 50 stories high and bigger than the nihon maru. Not at all realistic. It's a caravel, not a 19th century ship of the line.

I thought it was a Galleon.

I'm pretty sure in the reading about the Black Ship it labels it a caravel.

the only thing i don't like about the black ship, or even the nanban trade ships, is auto resolve doesn't work in my favor at all. manually, the black ship can take out 99% of what the AI fields out most of the game, but on auto resolve your black ship is going to suffer losses. nanban trade ships, while half the cannons, can pretty much do the same as a black ship, but you put one nanban trade ship on auto resolve, the ship is going to be sunk

and on the topic, ive never seen the AI repair their black ship
