Default Will this run it?...That is the question!

    Hi guys,

Thinking about getting a new laptop. When I say laptop, I really mean desktop-replacement - however, will it run Shogun 2 on Ultra/High? - That is the question

I also want to compare my old desktop to this new laptop, and see if the laptop will actually perform better.

    Current Desktop:

    CPU: Intel Core i7 920 @2.8GHz
    GPU: GTX 260 896MB
    RAM: 3GB DDR3 1333MHz
    HDD: NFI (320GB???)
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
    Resolution: 1680x1050

    Alienware Laptop - M17x R3:

    Processor- Intel® Core™ i7 2720QM 2.2GHz (3.3GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)

Thermal Paste Lower temps and extend life of system!- Stock thermal compound

    Operating System-Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English

    Video Card-2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6970M

    LCD Panel-17.3-inch WideFHD1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED

    Memory- 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz (4DIMMS)

    Hard Drive- 750GB 7,200RPM SATA-II HDD

Internal Optical Drive- Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)

    Many thanks to anyone who can help me;

Your Current desktop I'd say high/ultra mix.

That Desktop replacement laptop - Ultra quite happily

Would love to see some benchies with that laptop when you get it I have an MSi GX740 which hasa 5870M in it and that runs Shogun 2 on high/ultra happily

At best, change the graphics card to GTX 580 or GTX 570.

It'll max out all right, your CPU is powerful.

Why laptop? I prefer desktop for upgrade flexibility.

Forget about the laptop. Alienware is over priced and laptops have heat issues.

Order a copy of Windows 7 and a new video card for your desktop.

Thank you - however, I probably should have reworded my original question:

I am not planning on upgrading my desktop, as I am getting a laptop and I need a laptop.

I can get this alienware for a very cheap price - so it's 'over-priced' value is not of concern.

I simply would like to know how the laptop would run Shogun 2 (+Napoleon and Empire) and at what settings. Apologies for the confusion.

    Thanks,

You may be able to run it on ultra, but that quad at 2.2 is slow

Note: It will be set at 3.3GHz (Turbo Mode) while playing.

Can i ask instead of paying 100)+ dollars on a laptop, buy an 570, buy an new hdd, oc the i7, and then buy a 500 dollar laptop, your overall have a better gaming experience that way. Laptops are op, they have major heat issues, and its not really upgradeable. The only reason i can see buying a gaming laptop as if your travel for business alot, and want to play games well your at a hotel or what ever, other wise besides that i just don't see any reason to buy it.

    Here is the deal:

The 6970m that comes with your laptop is a beauty! It is a 6870 in a laptop, and it has the same power also.

Your cpu wont be any bottleneck nor here nor in the 2-3 years that should come.

I would also vouch for the Sager/Clevo PH150m (or NP8150, the name depends on who is selling this), that is a 15'' chassis that comes equipped with everything that your m17x r3 can get, but with a lower profile and much lower weight. There is the pricing issue though, since it costs a little bit less than the m17x at least in the US.

Dont be afraid to play on a laptop, I do this for 6 years and I have yet to encounter something that discourage me from doing it again. I will probably never buy again a desktop.

op will be disappointed if he believes this.

    6870 has 1120 5-D VLIW shaders, 56 TMUs, 256bit mem-interface, 900mhz clock
    6870m has 800 5-D VLIW shaders, 40 TMUs, 128 Bit mem-interface, 675mhz clock

cpu on the suggested laptop should be fine though, the turbomode should take care of the singlethreaded mess of total war code.

it still packs the same punch. You guys that only compare shadder numbers and all that are only going to be disappointed due to the improvements that are done in laptop gpu's otherwise they wouldnt run at the specified TDP, which for the 6970m is 75w-100w

Fdk, you also compared the 6870m, instead of the laptop's 6970m.

The 6970m is almost identical to the 6870 desktop, except for 680MHz Engine lock instead of 775MHz, and 1.3TFLOPS compare to 1.49 TFLOPS.

6870 stock speed is 900/1050 btw..
    And has 2 TFLOPS.
