Genoa or Venice?

I Am About to start a Campaing,but i don't know if i Start with: Venice or Genoa.
I Hope you can answer the diferences about them in SS 6.4,you experiences & which one could I start a Campaing .

never played 6.4 as I'm using the PB compilation but based on experience Venice is harder and more entertaining due to their starting locations and lack of unique cavalries compared to their neighbours

Venice has slightly better roster later but you have to play a long time with either to get it. Genoa gets to fight alot of french and hre cavalries while Venice main enemy is usually ERE so its up to you which you prefer to fight. early era Genoa has it easier but in later eras Venice has it easier.

i couldnt decide so i picked genoa and took the venetian starting postiions aswell as pisa and genoa, adn i gave milan to the pope to avoid confrontation with the HRE

They are both really similar factions in what they get, I'm playing as Venice right now and am allied to Genoa.

Both get the high-quality Italian militia units.

You should do it based on what you want to do in the game - if you want to focus on the western Mediterranean, Genoa is better. If you want to focus on the eastern Mediterranean, Venice is better. Genoa can expand into France, and Venice into Germany.

am new to this mod and when picking i closed my eyes and picked genoa.
Now i am in 220 turn alied with HRE form the firts turn and still in love with them.
I destroyed venice, all west coast is mine, 90% spain, moors have one castle left in toledo, now am in war with egipt have all moors sett in the north africa + libyia from egipt, now i turned my attention on byiz conqe. Zagreb and adriatic sea coast...so far not so bad being an guenoa.

I know I should elaborate but the awesomeness of Venice should be self explanatory. Especially when you make Genoese X-bows an AoR unit (available to Venice after capturing Genoa ofc.) and give them Famiglia Ducale with Venetian textures (really don't see why this unit should be exclusive to a single Italian faciton, as if Venice didn't have aristocrats).

You don't think Genoa's roster is horrid? The only fun units the Venetians get are their own heavy infantry and their own archers with stakes, which are a plus over any arbalester or crossbow units IMO, aside that, their roster is pretty bland crap that.

Never played as them.I usually kil them before they get any late units so I wouldn't know.

Rosters bland? Arbalesters and pavise crossbows crap?
Something is very wrong in that.
Pesante archers are not great because stakes. Anyone can put stakes on gate to defeat stupid AI cavalry. Their strong feature is the armor. They have the armor of a light man-at-arms! The rage is good and same the damage. But archers have a very different business in battlefield. Their specialisation, fire a lor, arrow mass and create a morale brake when use fire arrows. Great for slow moving targets with low armor.
Pavise crossbows and arbalesters are a very different type of unit. Put them on walls and will beat the best unit 1v1, in close combat and crossbow fire. On battlefield will make wonders in combination with pavise spearmans or better a halebard/pike unit.

Back to topic, Genova is a great faction. They have both voulgiers, a great close combat unit and the experts crossbows. Plus their expansion direction is in western mediteraneean sea. Are perfect suited for antiFrance/antiHRE faction.

But I always will preffer Venice. They got the pavise crossbows/spearmans/gunners plus their fanteria pesante. Add to that broken lances, man-at-arms and the oportunity of mourtadoi. Great faction, flexibility and great economy. Plus a wonderfull capital.

genoa is basically a copy of paste of the papal states unfortunatly or looking at thier faction roster and the color of thier units i always got that impression anyway.

Either way you go, make the Northern Italian Cities your home base and the campaign map is yours. Italy with it's vast population and trade opportunities, has few rivals or equals.

They're so similar it mainly depends on where you want to go. Basically, Genoa goes to France/West Germany and Venice goes to the Balkans and East Germany (Cold War much?)
