On the campaign map I accidentally pressed a button which eliminated all the city names. I can see all of my character names and I cannot get it back.

Press the F1 Key to bring up the list of hotkeys - that will let you find out what you need to press to toggle them back on.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

Just press ctrl + t to bring back city names, and ctrl + n to get rid of the character names.
And also, do what Entropy said, and take some time to study the Hotkey list.
