    Default Performance Questions

    Hi,

I've just started with the mod and i have a few questions related to performance. I've got quite an old rig as you can see below:-

    Athlon 64 x2 4600 - 2.4ghz
    4gb ram
    GTX 260

I have most settings on low except the unit detail which is on high and unit size is huge. Grass and shadows are off. Basically the only thing i want to have decent graphics for are the units.

I get a decent frame rate the majority of the time but once two armies engage in melee things become pretty choppy. Zooming into a melee is a big no no which is unfortunate since i don't get to see the wonderfully detailed units.

I'm wondering if anyone else gets this problem who has a simular rig composition to mine?

If not i guess i will have to bite the bullet and lower the unit size. I am well aware of the fact RTW only uses one core and really only takes advantage of 2gb's of RAM but some people have posted they can have 3 full stacks fighting at one time with no slowdown. Are they making that up or do they mean they have no slowdown providing they do not zoom into a melee?

Also, can someone give me an example (screenshot if possible) of the difference between high res unit models and default. I've tried both but i can't seem to spot the difference so does it only apply to certain units rather than all?

    Thanks

One of your problems is the 2,4 Ghz Core...RTW only makes use of 1 core...an older single core Pentium IV with 3,8 Ghz would do marvels compared to your actual one...

You can try to lower the resolution. I have a i5 Quad Core with 2,67 Ghz and can play easily on huge with 2 full armys on the field...nice and smooth...now a third full army slows things down...
I play on medium settings with grass and vegetation to low (performance hog)
I play on 1280 x 1024...for battles you could lower even to 1024 x 768...who cares if you get nice big battles

And I do zoom into melee...why not ?...everybody who ever have played Shogun 1 or MTW will still appreciate it
EDIT: For zoom into melee you have to check box UNIT SHADERS ON or you go CTD on zooming in

Thanks for the speedy reply that's useful info.

Just out of interest, do you have your unit detail set to high or medium?
Also do you get a big slowdown when you zoom into a melee between 2 full stacks?

That seems to be my main issue, as long as i keep a fair distance then things run pretty decent. I understand that the unit detail affects the sprite generation distance but i'm interested to know whether this affects other people as well.

    Cheers

I play on medium unit detail...Iam looking for performance...Units wont look anyway like those from Shogun 2...so I dont care to much
well...I dont have slow downs on zooming in...

I think its the graphic card playing a major role for the polygone stuff and possiblñe slow downs on zoom in or out...my one is only 512 MB but its DDR5 and my system memory is DDR3...this all helps as data is processed really quick

I think i have found a balance between graphics and performance now. I lowered effects down to medium which has seemed to make a big impact especially in sieges. Still keeping unit size on huge but i'm willing to put up with a bit of slowdown so i can have big battles
