First of all, this is not necessarily a criticism, though some may see it as such.
I know there was a thread, perhaps since moved to the strategy section, about trying to beat the game on Legendary with just Ashigaru. Well, this was the test run and now on to Legendary. I don't have exact proof, you will just have to trust me on this. The only non-Ashigaru units in any of my armies were the Great Guard and two Yari Cavalry that you get after taking Kyoto, which never saw combat(garrisoned in Kyoto). Also I only have maybe two imported matchlocks? No siege weapons either. Basically just Ashigaru spear and bow, and generals. Not even loan-swords(did not have that mod installed at the time).
It was done as the Oda, of course, and done somewhat quickly. There were some tough battles, but actually, I found using all Ashigaru armies to be quite effective, as I could field a TON of troops. Just look at my armies on the screenshot, and I'm raking in like 12k a year, with only the horses trade node. I also have at least one or two Ashigaru in almost every single castle, not bad!
A good tactic I found, was to use vassals, a lot of vassals. A couple had two provinces, helping me reach my goal. It also allowed me to focus two or more huge stacks of Ashigaru armies on one province/area.
I found it funny that my units, and my Daimy(!) only got a TINY amount of experience, when that army in the picture, at least some of those units have been on the march for the entire game, and Oda Nobuhide has probably easily fought 30+ battles(he's max rank, ashigaru/infantry line, of course
).
Anyways, enjoy some screens(they are 1680x1050).
