Default Units Keep Stacking Up When attacking An Enemy Unit

Perhaps this is due to limitations with AI in 2006, but I noticed if I send 2 or 3 friendly units of say Militia Spearmen to attack a single enemy unit, instead of all 3 spearmen units spreading out and surrounding the enemy unit, only the unit at the front of the attack will fight, while the other 2 units will stay in the back.

This is especially a problem if I'm sending units through a city and into the city square, and I attack a unit at the square, only the unit leading the march will fight, while the other 2 units will stay in the rear of the march.

Then I end up having to order the rear units to move out to the flank of the enemy unit and then order an attack.

    It's difficult to explain.

But basically, if I order 2 units to attack a single enemy unit, the 2 units will stack up in front of the enemy unit, instead of spreading out around the enemy unit.

You need to position them manually, the game will not do it for you.

Just tell 1 squad to attack frontal, while leading the other behind them(or from the side),and then tell them to attack. That way they won't stack.
Bigger battles, more attention to the field, thats how it goes.

If you want to be sure they attack in formation, put them in formation, then group them, then tell the group to attack. The results are still not entirely predictable and they will get out of formation if you order them to run anyway.
