Icon13 First battle, total failure. Just unbelievable. Deja vu.

Finally started my first campaign, Hojo on hard. Take it slow for a couple of turns on my two starting regions, Imagawa declares a war on me and marches in with a big stack from the west while the neighbor minor clan from the east brings its own stack. They siege my top region and it looks like I'm done for, but I decide to play it out anyway.

Imagawa rushes up my castle and I rebuke them, then sally and drive back their archers.

His ally from the other side comes within visible range and stops.

    Sits there, doesn't move.

I regroup inside the castle and wait. He doesn't move.

I bring out a unit and try to provoke him. He sends a few units but leaves most of the big army sitting there.

I perform a face palm and alt+f4 in disgust.

This is why I was so hesitant to try the game for these two weeks. I've been here before. When my first battle in MTW2 the AI refused to attack despite being the attacker. When my first battle in ETW the AI formed a single file line with all its units spanning the whole map as I watched in disbelief. Hearing all the positive impressions about the game made me buy it, but the weight of my experiences kept me cautious. I skipped NTW, so this makes it THREE total war games in a row for me where the very first battle has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

If anyone from CA is reading this, I want you to know that whatever your next game is, it's not going to lose a few of my $$ based on its merit. It's going to lose it based on this storied history.

If you actually enjoyed the game you wouldn't rage quit because of something like this anyway so see you after the next TW title I guess?

I hate to play devils advocate here but that was the best tactical decision the AI could have made in that instance, after seeing the first army break on your walls it makes sense for them to force you to meet them in open ground, but based on the fact that they are trying to take you over it doesnt make sense, however if you had set it to a timed battle i believe you could have waited them out and still won the battle because they are the attacker.

Strange, when I'm siege defending the AI always does suicidal attacks...

That's the problem when a newbie like you just starts their games on easy difficulty, I set campaign to normal and battle to very hard, and in EVERY battle when the AI is the attacker it sends it's army to attack and in sieges it does a pretty nice job it even dismounts it's cavalry and send them to fight, I have never played battles on easier diffculties so the problem maybe that you are a noobcake playing on easy.

He was playing Hojo on hard mate (even I lost with them)

AI was either really smart there or really broken. Either way, i'm sorry to hear the very first battle left a bitter taste in your mouth (try eating a mint next time, it takes away bitterness....).

Sounds like you got unlucky here. I've heard about the unresponsive attacking siege AI, but never seen it. Give it another shot, you'll either enjoy it or you won't.

AI reinforcement is known to be passive, have to wait for the patch to solve this.

think about that: If I was the AI commander, I would probably do the same
Wait outside until you sally to the open and die.

one "Improvement" SS mod of M2TW got was to made AI passive when it has no advantage over player, forcing player to attack first.

AI reinforcement armies for sieges are buggy. They don't want to attack. Otherwise the AI performs quite well.

That sucks man. M2TW and ETW are really awesome, engaging and fun games with the mods that are available.

In my opinion, TWS2 is an amazing game just by itself, no mods. With the mods that are already in work, it's going to be just as good as any TW game.

You can't write off the game because of just one bad situation, give it a fair shake. And ...the game is still young, patches will come eventually.

Precisely - give it a few patches and I'm sure the game will be even better than it is now.

Not sure if my memories were right(since I always have time limit), but if you have unlimited battletime back in M2TW
the AI will stay outside your range when you outnumbered him as defender.

I think I'm just going to switch it to 40 minutes. I think 20 minutes is too short and 60 minutes is too long.

This is why I'm running battles with 20 min timelimit. Can't stand to wait when the AI freaks out on me.

I don't think 20 minutes is too short, battles are pretty fast in this game so it rarely takes a very long time unless it's a huge battle with several stacks. (I usually change the time limit before those battles.)

They could make a button which would auto end the battle by making all the enemies retreat.
And why does the A.I. just don't withdraw from the battle if it isn't going to attack? I am not going out of my fort for nothing so why the hell don't they just GTFO

lol even 5 min battle limit would be enough to never reach before the battle is over
