It's random imo. If you have an army running around WITHOUT a general, sometimes after the battle is over it gives you the opinion to enlist some guy for 1000 koku.
If you win a battle without a proper general, you will have an opportunity to promote a soldier to a general (spawns with his army).
There are also some random cases where a loyal retainer will prove himself worthy of leadership and you can make him a general (spawns at capital).
I'm curious, does a higher experience levelled unit in an army have higher chances of becoming a general when fighting without a general? Or is it just random?
While it appears to be random, I dont think it really is. Reason being, if I am running low on general units and need a couple I send out armies without a general. Pyrric victories seem to be kind of rare without a general unit, but it also seems when it happens you get someone promoted to general. In most cases three to four wins with an army without a general to get one promoted, but this does not hold true if you add or subtract from the army before it happenes. Keep in mind now I am someone who runs down and makes sure the enemy is slaughtered to the last man on the theory if the units are dead they cannot heal and must be purchased anew! LOL This could have an effect on getting someone promoted.
If seeking instant gratification without thought to repercussions, take a shotgun to it!
conditions for spawning a general as I understand them and what has worked for me on reg basis
- you must have 1000 + cash before the battle begins
- when you are sending in one or multiple stack into the fight all of them must be without a general. not just the sack that triggers the battle.
-primary stack should have at least 1 slot open where general is going to fit. aka completely full stack wont work i dont think. at least I always leave 1 slot open and it work also works if some units perished in combat. I have not seen completely full stacks spawn a general from what I remember
- unit and/or stack ( not sure) must do well on the battle field "heroic" results on post battle screen usually spawns generals if all of the above are met. I am inclined to belove that its the whole stack.
unit make up does not mater.
When I want a general I just send a completely overpowered 100% win generalless stack vs a defenseless single unit or undefended town and autobattle. the end result is usually heroic and I usually get a general. I even want to say I always get a general that way never bothered to test.
