No backpacks

Are there any plans to edit the equipment tables to get rid of the backpacks permanently? In WW1 soldiers very rarely wore their packs and trying to cross No Man's Land carrying a big bloody backpack would be tricky.
If not is there any mod for Nappy that can do this, then I'll just (try)mod it myself.

Eh... depending on the army. Later in the war, western front soldiers didn't wear them. however, on the eastern front troops there took part in large advances, so they took they're equipment.

We could have it that regular rifle units have packs and fast moving light or shock troops would not.

I honestly care little about realism as far as backpacks are considered, to me they look ugly and unneeded.
I know that they were removed on ETW via some kind of equipment_table edit so would that be compatible with NTW as well?

No, but it would be quite simple to either do yourself or have someone make a sub-mod.

Okay I'll have a look around, I'm not a 3D or DB editor though I've only gone as far as texture editing so I'll see what's going on

During the first year or so of the war, when everyone thought warfare would be highly mobile, troops (even regularily, I believe) wore backpacks. When the armies bogged down, however, generals soon learned to ditch them for the reasons you mentioned. Perhaps the most logical alternative would be to give all early units backpacks, but then remove them for all countries apart from Russia, and perhaps Austria (who fought extensively on the eastern frontier, Germany is a bit trickier since they waged war on equal scale on both fronts).
