    Default King's men

I was thinking whats the point of them? they are inferior to French and German knights of the same era and only very slightly better then normal Feudals. Then i saw that they had axes... so they must have AP making them far more effective right? but they don't have the AP thing in the stats... so im back to the start, whats the point of them and why don't they have AP?

The point is that as England, you have no better type of troop. IIRC they also have a more favorable type of replenishment rate and better discipline. When I get home I shall check the hidden stats and compare.

Similar situation with Archontopoulai for the Romans, a beautiful unit from an ultra high level building (Army Barracks) with surprisingly little use (they are not measurably better than Stratatoi).

They're ill trained nobles with good gear, what else is there to explain.

King's men have the advantage of AP secondary weapons for after charging...
they have pretty good stats with those axes, too.

They have AP. It just doesn't show up because it's only on their secondary weapon (i.e. their axes).

england should have gothic knights. just look up the war of the roses, the knights there were equipped very similarly to those of the HRE

er, i don't know a ton about english history, but i do know that the war of the roses was in the mid to late 1400s. Gothic knights go out of style by then in game, and most players don't go that far. england has enough knights as it is.

Which is a bit silly. I hate how some of the best knights go out of style then. They should be available through the 1500's since there was still some use of armored cavalry during the first half of that century. anyway by 1550 most people quit playing, so to hell with it, let's just have them available for the rest of the game.

If we were going by unit use, we could cut out most units after the 1400s as few people get that far.

King's Men armor can upgrade to Full Plate->Improved Metallurgy->Advanced Metallurgy, which you could consider as Greenwich Armor and has similar protection to Gothic.

i normally do mod them with similar upgrades, and boost their stats a little to match their contemporaries on the mainland

I never understood why they have those ugly bucket helmets while dismounted ones have nice late era ones?

With AP, they not only pierce armor bonus but also the shield bonus.

    AP doesn't affect shields.

King's men are really, really good. They have solid AP secondaries that make them perfect anti-cavalry cavalry. They're better against other horse units than their equivalents, but not as good against foot units (lightly armoured ones, anyhow).

Yes, after that the English only get Demi-Lancers (I think, haven't played in a while), but they're England. England always had a lack of super-heavy horsemen anyhow, which forced them to rely on foot units and archers.
