Why is it that I am limited to three trade routes (four if I tolerate nanban)?

I have half the land under my grip!


A fix I found in a later Legendary game was to lose the original provinces. After my first conquest (Iyo) I packed up every able body who could tote a spear and sailed northwest. Took the province with the artisans planning on future expert bowers. Shortly my island neighbors ate my original two provinces while I ate the other seven on the island.

Now than my capitol is connected via a land trade route I have lots more possible trade routes.
